PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Last spring, Berkshire Community College (BCC) Coordinator of Disability Services Pam Farron was watching a documentary film called "Normal Isn't Real: Succeeding with Learning Disabilities & ADHD," which features actors and actresses openly talking about their disabilities and ways they have coped with them in the workplace. "The film was made to help break the myth, to demystify disabilities," Farron said. "I reached out to them and asked if I could use it, but it was expensive." She decided to do her own version. Amy Hall, president and CEO of Child Care of the Berkshires, speaks at Friday's annual Step Up event at Pittsfield City Hall. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — One case of child abuse is too many, Berkshire leaders say.
The steps of City Hall were lined with 56 pairs of children's shoes on Friday, representing the average number of children with confirmed abuse and neglect cases each month in the county. The Children's Trust and Child Care of the Berkshires coordinate this shocking visual yearly.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Monday, May 13 marks the start of phase three for the spring flushing schedule of the City of Pittsfield’s water system. Water mains throughout the city will be flushed through hydrants over the next several weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products. Mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, except holidays, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. This phase of flushing is expected to occur between May 13 to May 17. BOSTON — In collaboration with the Division of Banks (DOB) and the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR), the State Treasurer's Office of Economic Empowerment (OEE) announced a new round of funding for Operation Money Wise. This grant program offers funding to veteran-serving non-profit organizations, public agencies, and higher education institutions to host financial programming that serves the Military, Veteran, Family, and Survivor Community (MVFSC). Veteran-serving organizations can apply for up to $5,000 in funding, which must be used before March 31, 2025. Downtown Pittsfield Inc. Director Rebecca Brien is credited with the vibrancy seen downtown, including 23 new businesses in the past year. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — This past year has been a "whirlwind of activity" for Downtown Pittsfield Inc., according Director Rebecca Brien.
DPI held its annual meeting at the Berkshire Museum on Thursday, touting the 17 businesses welcomed to the downtown in 2023 and six so far this year.
In preparing for the event, Brien referred to her first project with the 230-member organization for inspiration: the strategic plan.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Dalton man was arrested on Thursday evening after allegedly kidnapping and shooting another man.
Nicholas Lighten, 35, was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Friday on multiple charges including kidnapping with a firearm and armed assault with intent to murder. He was booked in Dalton around 11:45 p.m. the previous night.
There was heavy police presence Thursday night in the area of Lighten's East Housatonic Street home before his arrest. Shortly before 7 p.m., Dalton dispatch received a call from the Pittsfield Police Department requesting that an officer respond to Berkshire Medical Center.
