Pittsfield School Officials OK Contracts, Gets Diversity Update

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee last week approved memoranda of agreement with three of four bargaining units.   After an executive session, the committee returned to regular session to unanimously endorse new agreements with the cafeteria, paraprofessionals and educational secretary units.    A fourth, with the bus drivers and attendants, was tabled as committee member Sarah Hathaway commented that "we look forward to approving it when the language is tinkered with a just little bit."   The committee also approved raises for substitute paraprofessionals and educational secretaries of about $10 a day, depending on category, and

Pittsfield Panel Looks to Improve Snow Removal Compliance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With winter just a couple of months away, the city is looking to improve snow removal on its sidewalks.

The Ordinances and Rules subcommittee on Monday discussed updating the snow and ice removal process. Proposed changes include increasing the number of inspectors from one to five for better enforcement and allowing only one warning per calendar year.

The petition was referred to City Solicitor Stephen Pagnotta and will be taken up at the panel's November meeting.

This was originally brought forward by Councilor at Large Earl Persip III early in the year and referred to Director of Public Health Andy Cambi.

Pittsfield License Board Pull Tito's License, Delays Transfer

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Licensing Board on Monday rescinded Tito's Mexican Grill's liquor license after it was abandoned. 

Next month, the board will entertain a motion to transfer an existing license to Tito's under new ownership.

"This isn't what we would like to do with these licenses," board member Kathy Amuso said. "But I feel like we're put in a position that we have no choice."

The restaurant closed its doors about five months ago and principal Felipe Perez has been unable to be reached by either the city or the new owner, who is also the owner of La Fogata on Tyler Street.

Pittsfield Police Investigating Daytime Shooting on Springside Avenue

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are asking for information about a shooting incident Monday on Springside Avenue that saw several homes struck by bullets while children were getting off a school bus. 

A ShotSpotter activation occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Monday on Springside Avenue near the intersection of Parker Street. Several residents also called police to report a shooting.

Responding officers confirmed that there were no reported injuries but found that several buildings on Springside Avenue had been struck by gunfire and shell casings were recovered nearby.

Berkshire Art Center Opens Second Location in Pittsfield

Berkshire Arts Center Executive Director Lucie Castaldo and board Chair Michael Zippel cut the ribbon to the new location on Friday.  

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Art Center — formerly IS183 Art School — cut the ribbon on its Pittsfield location on Friday, increasing accessibility for Central Berkshire residents and beyond.

"For us, being able to be in the heart of Berkshire County is incredible for our programming," Executive Director Lucie Castaldo said.

The new space in the Brothership Building at 141 North St. was bustling with art makers and appreciators during its grand opening reception.

PortaVia Opens in Former Paddy's Pub

Owner James Boland says he saw opportunity when the former Paddy's Pub space opened up late last year. 

DALTON, Mass. — PortaVia is bringing a taste of Italy to Dalton with fresh ingredients and generational recipes.

The eatery opened in the former Paddy's Pub in August, offering pizza, comfort appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and curated alcoholic beverages.  

The Italian word "porta via" translates to "takeaway" in English.

Owner James Boland and his wife, Donna, have embarked on this venture while working full-time jobs largely for one reason: family.

Community Walks 'Out of The Darkness' for Suicide Prevention

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Some 200 people participated in the Berkshire County Out of the Darkness walk for suicide prevention on Saturday. For some, it was a day to honor the life of a loved one and for others, it was a day to acknowledge themselves as survivors.

Walkers began at the Common, made a loop around Silver Lake, and returned back to the park. The walks began nationally in 2004 and has been in the Berkshires since 2015.

Pittsfield Man Charged in Murder

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a Pittsfield man on Friday evening.    Desmond Phillip, 42, is facing charges in the murder of 43-year-old Teddy Cepeda.   Police responded to a Goodrich Street address at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a 911 call and found Cepeda with a gunshot wound. Paramedics transported Cepeda to Berkshire Medical Center, where he died.   The Pittsfield Police and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office established probable cause to arrest Phillip for the shooting.    The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. White Cane Day Celebration Planned at PHS

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The school district will recognize White Cane Day at Pittsfield High School in two weeks with an event to celebrate the accomplishments of visually impaired people.

On Friday, Oct. 14, students of all ages with visual impairments will participate in activities, join a virtual presentation through the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, walk to City Hall to be greeted by Mayor Linda Tyer, and have lunch at PHS's culinary restaurant.

The national day of awareness is on Oct. 15 and has been celebrated since 1964. The cane is an essential tool used by this population to move around freely and safely.

Pontoosuc Lake Still Under Health Advisory

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Local officials are reminding the public that the health advisory issued Sept. 10 regarding a potential harmful cyanobacteria bloom in Pontoosuc Lake is still in effect and continued caution is advised.   Although results from analysis of samples taken from the water column are within the acceptable range for all water activities, the presence of an intermittent scum necessitates continuation of the alert.   Public health officials from the city of Pittsfield and the town of Lanesborough say they are continuing to monitor the levels of cyanobacteria and recommend that residents exercise caution when using the lake.    The scum potentially has

City of Pittsfield Sets Public Forum on Homelessness
