Skyline Country Club Picked for Lanesborough Public Safety Building

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — After several months of negotiating with the property owner, the proposed $5.9 million police and ambulance building has a location: 405 South Main St. 

The 9-acre parcel, the site of the driving range for the former Skyline Country Club, is owned by Pittsfield's Mill Town Capital and its purchase will require approval at a special town meeting. Kristen Tool, chair of the Police Station Building Committee, gave a presentation on the property at Monday's Select Board meeting.

Pittsfield Bed Bath and Beyond Closing in Coming Months

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Bed Bath & Beyond on Merrill Road will be closing in the coming months, one of 150 stores being shuttered nationwide.   The Massachusetts closures in this second round include the Burlington, Raynham, North Dartmouth, and Dedham locations.   The closing were announced last August and the company also intends laying off 20 percent of its corporate employees. BCC '40 Under Forty' Awards to Resume Spring Schedule

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced it will host its 40 Under Forty awards in March 2024.    The hiatus in 2023 will allow the event to get back on track after its annual springtime schedule was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.    For the last two years, the event was held in September, whereas it historically takes place in March. The College plans to resume the springtime schedule, resetting the event with nominations opening this fall.    "40 Under Forty is truly one of the most special events we hold at BCC, and we are thrilled to be able to resume our spring schedule in 2024," said BCC President Ellen Kennedy.

2nd Street to Hold Clinic on Sealing Criminal Records

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 2nd Street, together with Community Legal Aid and the Committee for Public Counsel Services, will hold a free clinic on how to seal or expunge a criminal record on Friday, Feb. 10 from 1:30-3 pm.    The clinic will be held at the 2nd Street offices, located at 264 Second Street, Pittsfield. Pittsfield School Committee Votes Taconic All-Vocational

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In a historic move fueled by the growing demand for skilled tradespeople and the evolution of career technical education, the School Committee has decided that Taconic is a solely vocational school.

On Tuesday, the committee unanimously voted to start the school's transition to all vocational, only accepting Career Technical Education (CTE) students beginning in the fall. The motion was followed by a round of applause.

All new non-CTE students will attend Pittsfield High School and Taconic's remaining non-CTE students in Grades 10-12 will graduate as usual. The class of 2027 will be the first all-technical class to graduate.

Pittsfield Woman Pleads Guilty to Larceny

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Heidi Kushi pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny and was sentenced to state prison.     On Monday, Jan. 30, Heidi Kushi, 57 years old of Pittsfield, pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny by single scheme. She was indited in July of 2019.    The defendant was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in state prison, both counts concurrent, by Judge Agostini.    Kushi, who began working for Donovan Construction in June 2013 as their accountant/bookkeeper, stole $138,772.72 during her time at the company. Hot Plate Brewery Debuts in Downtown Pittsfield on Thursday

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With all licensing secured, Hot Plate Brewery will have a soft opening on Thursday.

Owners Sarah Real and Mike Dell'Aquila will debut the micro-brewery to the public with six beers on tap starting at 4 p.m.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., transplants began planning their venture in the Berkshires two years ago, saying that the region seemed underserved from a craft beer perspective.

"Hot Plate" was inspired by the equipment that the couple used to brew beer in the city when they lost heat and hot water for three years because of a code violation.

On Monday, Licensing Board granted Hot Plate a weekday (Monday through Saturday) and Sunday entertainment license.

Pittsfield Parade Committee Announces 2023 Theme

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — "Stars, Stripes, and Smiles in the Berkshires" was chosen as the theme for the line of march for the next Fourth of July Parade.     Parade Committee Chairman Peter Marchetti said about 17 ideas were tossed out by the committee.   "All were good but we try to use a litmus test that works for all units and the judges on the reviewing stand," he said.   An example was Dancing in the Streets, which Marchetti said didn't allow for many options for floats.   "It's a process taken seriously by the committee like everything else we do," said Marchetti.   In addition, the annual meeting, held on Nov.

Two Pedestrians Struck By Car in Pittsfield

Dalton Select Board Votes to Hold Off on Certain Voting Options for Local Election

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted to hold off on offering early voting by mail or in person for for the local election on May 8.   The town had "successfully" implemented these practices as required during the September state primary election and November general election.
