BCC Continues Series of free MassReconnect Information Sessions | 04:00PM / Friday, October 13, 2023 | |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) continues its series of special community college information sessions on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 5 pm and Thursday, Nov. 30 at 5 pm. The Nov. 1 session will be held in Room G-12 on BCC's main campus, located at 1350 West Street, Pittsfield. The Nov. 30 session will be held online. Both sessions are free. To register for either session, visit www.berkshirecc.edu/massreconnect. Financial aid, admissions and advising staff will be on hand. BOSTON — State police have released a statement regarding "vigilance and readiness" after a former Hamas leader’s call for a "global day of jihad" on Oct. 13. "At this time we are aware of no specific or credible threats in Massachusetts related to the attack on Israel or the call for jihad by terrorists, but as ever, we remain vigilant and will advise our citizens if that changes," The Massachusettes State Police wrote.
"Please know that we maintain constant vigilance and a consistently high state of readiness to rapidly respond to developing threats, critical incidents, and requests for assistance."

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — There have been over 1,300 violations of the district's new cell phone policy this academic year with more middle schoolers issued lockable cell phone devices.
Lockable devices have been issued 70 times in Pittsfield's middle schools and 34 times in the high schools. A total of 38 secondary students received the penalty for repeat offenders and 22 were of middle school age.
"They are definitely having a little bit of the hardest time," Deputy Superintendent Marisa Mendonsa said to the School Committee on Wednesday.

Editor's Pick Purgatory Road Community Recreation Association, Dalton Time: Friday and Saturday, 7 until 10 p.m. Take a haunted hike behind the Dalton CRA this weekend to raise money for suicide prevention. Actors will be waiting to scare your socks off during this 20-minute hike. There will be uneven terrain, strobe lights, and fog machines. DALTON, Mass. — The town has more money left in its American Rescue Plan funds than it previously anticipated. The town had previously decided to allocate $380,000 for sewer repairs but it was announced during the Select Board meeting on Tuesday that the sewer rehabilitation bids came in substantially lower than what was projected. The board voted to allocate some of the remaining funds to cover the cost of repairs for the town garage overhead door and an initial expense for a police accreditation system. The American work culture has shifted radically since COVID-19. The idea that there is more in life than work is catching on among many workers. Working from home, quiet quitting, and "missing Mondays" are all symptoms of this change as is a four-day workweek.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development is piloting a new program this winter, the Snow Angel program. The program will match community volunteers with a senior or person with a physical disability to assist with snow removal. Snow on sidewalks can be hazardous for residents, including school children, those with limited mobility, and those who work outside in winter months like postal carriers or public safety officials. The city code requires property owners to clear snow from abutting sidewalks within 24 hours of the completion of the storm. This can be a challenge for older adults or residents with disabilities. The work site was in the eastbound lane of West Street. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A worker died Thursday after being struck by a vehicle in a construction zone on West Street. Police say Shane Cassavant, 49, of Lanesborough was working in the roadway when he was struck by an eastbound 2015 Chevrolet Colorado operated by Edward Ladouceur, 87, of Pittsfield, who entered the construction zone. Cassavant was taken to Berkshire Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.  DALTON, Mass. — A GoFundMe was established to help the victims of Monday evening's fire on High Street. At the time of publication, more than $5,000 had been raised of the $20,000 goal. The fundraiser's organizer Molly Gingras has been friends with one of the home's occupants, Madison Wallace, since middle and high school. She asked Wallace's permission to start the GoFundMe to aid in rebuilding the lives of her and her father, Kevin Wallace, because she had seen other successful fundraisers that raised similar amounts for victims of local fires. DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Health voted to condemn, vacate and secure 96 Anthony Road during its meeting on Wednesday night. Despite the pleas from the home's occupants, Gary Dill and Cheryl Goodkowsky, the board was concerned about their safety and could not grant another extension. The board required in September that the couple make a 3-by-3-foot path to the egresses in the kitchen, bathroom, hallway and primary bedroom in addition to cleaning the kitchen and bathroom to meet sanitary standards by Oct. 11.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick unsuccessfully tried to have a recent cannabis establishment's permit appealed.
On Tuesday, the City Council shot down his attempt to reverse the Zoning Board of Appeals September granting of a special permit to Cloud 9 for a retail store at Allendale Shopping Center.
The councilor said Cloud 9 will "adversely impact businesses and shoppers experience." He expressed concerns about children being exposed to the legalized substance because it is in a shopping mall, not a standalone building.
