State Fire Marshall: When You Change Your Clocks, Check Your Alarms02:24PM / Thursday, November 03, 2022 | | STOW, Mass. —With the end of daylight savings time coming on Nov. 6, Massachusetts fire officials issued a seasonal reminder to check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and change the batteries when you change your clocks. "Working smoke and CO alarms are crucial home safety tools," said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. "As we 'fall back' this weekend, be sure you have the best protection by putting fresh alkaline batteries in alarms that use them and replacing alarms that are out of date." Berkshire Athenaeum Accepts Digital Literacy Grant By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff 10:35AM / Thursday, November 03, 2022 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The library trustees accepted a Public Library Association digital literacy workshop incentive grant in the amount of $7,000. "This is a cohort of 160 libraries nationally who are using the shared curriculum to provide digital literacy classes, workshops for the community. So this grant is in the amount of $7,000 that can be used toward these workshops," Berkshire Athenaeum Director Alex Reczkowski said. Pittsfield Adds New Languages to Emergency Notification System08:20AM / Thursday, November 03, 2022 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's emergency notification system, CodeRED, now features Spanish, French, and Portuguese language options. CodeRED notifications, which are produced and generated by the city of Pittsfield, include both citywide calls as well as neighborhood specific messaging. Updates can range from missing persons alerts, severe weather events, road closures, hydrant flushing, water main breaks, and other emergencies. Currently, a total of 16, 212 users, from both residences and businesses, are signed up for CodeRED and receive updates via phone messages, texts, and emails. BCC Wins Grant for Behavioral Health Workforce Program 03:06PM / Wednesday, November 02, 2022 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) has been awarded a $1,080,231 grant from a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program called Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET). Grant funds, dispersed over four years, will provide stipends, partial reimbursement of tuition and fees, and supplies for up to 15 students per year enrolled in BCC's Mental Health, Addiction Recovery and Human Services certificate programs. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city has a new way to get rid of mattresses after the state banned them from waste disposal starting Nov. 1. Residents will notice a different price tag and destination for the mattress. They will now schedule a pickup with a Fitchburg-based recycling company and pay a service fee of $55. The process will replace Pittsfield's bulky waste sticker program that costs $20 per item. "What we decided to do among the several different options was to partner with a company called Tough Stuff Recycling. Bioscience Image Library at BCC Sees Growth 12:09PM / Tuesday, November 01, 2022 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In 2019, when the pandemic had not yet taken hold in the United States, Berkshire Community College (BCC) Professor of Life Sciences Fayette Reynolds created the Bioscience Image Library. The website got under 1,000 hits. Three years later, as the global workforce has become accustomed to working remotely and relying on digital communication, the digital library has gotten more than 3.3 million hits and is still growing, according to a press release.
