Library's Short Story Contest Begins June 1

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield's Public Library, and the Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum announced the 46th Annual Short Story Writing Contest for Children and the 27th Annual Short Story Writing Contest for Young Adults.   The contest opens on Saturday, June 1, 2024, and closes at 4 pm on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024.   Youth Services Library Assistant Katie Robertson remembered entering the Library's short story contest as a youth.    "It made me excited to have something I wrote featured in the library. Downtown Pittsfield Mural Shows Morningside Students Shining

The mural is a collaboration between Morningside School and local artists Huck Elling and Marina Dominguez and funded through the Mill Town Foundation and MassDevelopment.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Morningside Community School students smiled and pointed as they saw their own faces in the new mural on the YMCA.

Last Friday, the multi-panel artwork was unveiled on North Street amidst a sea of bubbles and children's laughter. The project is a collaboration between local artists Huck Elling and Marina Dominguez, Morningside, Mill Town Foundation, and MassDevelopment's Transformative Development Initiative.

Berkshire Rowing Club Given OK for New Rack at Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community Rowing is expanding and would like a more sightly way to store its boats at Onota Lake.   "I don't know if I really need to say it, but rowing is a really great community-building sport," Head Coach Becca Cadoff said.   On Tuesday, the Parks Commission approved the installation of a temporary rack next to the boat ramp parking lot for the 2024 season.  BCR has operated out of Burbank Park since the late 1990s and has purchased more equipment due to the club's growth.   It will replace a temporary boat trailer used last year that is less aesthetically pleasing.   "We're in a growth period,

BMC North Street Driveway Closing as Part of Construction Project

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that the North Street driveway to Berkshire Medical Center (opposite the hospital's main entrance) will be closed as of Monday, June 3 and will remain closed for approximately six months.    This closure is the result of the ongoing DOT traffic circle project near the Medical Center.   During this phase of the project, the primary BMC campus entrance for vehicle traffic will move to the Charles Street driveway entrance, located between the Patient Parking Garage and the Medical Arts Complex.   When traveling North and South, use Wahconah Street to Charles Street to reach both

Pittsfield Police Threaten Criminal Charges for Orbeez Guns

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Police Department has doubled down on the school district's public warning about toy gel guns.

On Monday, Pittsfield Police issued a release about Orby or Orbeez toy guns, reporting that in recent weeks, there have been "numerous complaints" about juveniles playing with Orbeez and other similar air-powered toy guns that shoot gel pellets.

Earlier this month, Superintendent Joseph Curtis sent a memo to the school community about the "concerning trend" of gel pellet guns. The toy guns shoot gel or water beads and are said to pose a risk of physical harm and being mistaken for a real firearm.

Springside Pump Track Designers Scaling Back Over High Costs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A 50 percent jump in construction costs has put a roadblock in the proposed pump track at Springside Park but the commitment remains.

Alison McGee, president of the Berkshire Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association, and other planners went before the Parks Commission last week asking for more time to re-evaluate the project and fundraise. 

They are expected to present a "goal for a new approach towards the same goal" next month and "concrete options" in July.

Pittsfield Man Killed in Pedestrian Crash

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Pittsfield man operating a mobility scooter was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck Tuesday night on Second Street.    David Frye, 72, was traveling north on Second Street at about 7 p.m. when the collision occurred. He was taken by Action Ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.   According to the police report, a 2014 Dodge Ram operated by Dyvine Smythe, 24, of Adams, was eastbound on Wallace Place to take a right turn onto Second Street. The report continued that while entering onto Second, he collided with a Frye and his scooter.   Second Street was closed to traffic from Lake Street to Silver
