Pittsfield TDI Partnership Aids Downtown Businesses, Activates SpacesBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A total of $469,000 aided downtown businesses through MassDevelopment's Transformative Development Initiative last year. On Tuesday, TDI Fellow Julie Copoulos outlined the three-year program's progress in bringing life to North Street and its goals for 2024.
"Recently someone said to me, 'Well, you know, mayor, we need to start getting some storefronts open,' and thanks to Julie's work, we have six or seven new downtown businesses," Mayor Peter Marchetti said.
Since 2022, Copoulos has collaborated with over 20 stakeholders in the TDI district to foster equitable investment. Efforts are focused on housing, pedestrian

DALTON, Mass. — Sidewalks have been a widely discussed topic for over a year because of the large number that need repair. The town has been discussing repairs with residents since before the last town meeting when voters approved adding $10,000 to the budget for that purpose. During a May town meeting, voters will vote on two warrant articles on the topic. One proposes the purchase of a sidewalk paver for $64,000 so sidewalks can be paved or repaired for less money but is using asphalt rather than concrete. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) students Mariangel Dus and William Garrity have received national recognition for academic excellence. Both are members of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for associate degree–seeking students. Mariangel Dus won a spot on the 2024 All-USA Academic Team. The team, sponsored by education technology provider Cengage in collaboration with Phi Theta Kappa, recognizes students for intellectual achievement, leadership, community and campus engagement. Berkel, a retired Lieutenant with the State Police, currently serves as President of the Berkshire Coalition for Suicide Prevention (BCSP). In his role as President, Berkel has created a bridge between BCSP and first responders, the District Attorney's office, local community mental health providers, minority organizations, and other area mental health and suicide prevention advocates.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Roadwork was the topic of conversation during Monday's Public Works and Utilities subcommittee meeting.
The panel discussed a request to review the city's pavement management plan and received an update on various roadwork projects from Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales.
Councilors at Large Peter White and Earl Persip III believe that a comprehensive review of the pavement management plan is needed to ensure the effectiveness and longevity of the city's infrastructure.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Local accountants want to take the intimidation out of tax season for business owners with the help of tacos.
Stephanie Hill-Manuel and Charles Manuel of Breezy Tax are hosting a "Tacos and Taxes" event in downtown Pittsfield.
"We just really wanted to demystify it and take it down a notch and open it up to questions," Hill-Manuel said. "But also for people that are running into the March 15 deadline, that's when business tax returns are supposed to be in or you need to file an extension."

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two of the three votes needed to move forward with a proposal for a combined elementary school build will be made this week. The School Building Needs Commission will vote Tuesday on the submission of a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Association for Crosby Elementary School and Conte Community School. The School Committee will tackle it on Wednesday, ahead of the April 12 deadline. The City Council is expected to make a decision on March 26.
The two outdated facilities have insufficient layouts and are in need of significant repair. The proposal rebuilds both schools on the Crosby site with some shared facilities.
