DALTON, Mass. — The Fire District voters will be asked to approve nearly $3 million in spending articles at Tuesday's annual meeting. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.at the Stationery Factory. The 22 articles on the warrant amount to $2,950,182, a $253,728 increase from the previous year. The funds raised by taxation would amount to $1,063,582. The remaining costs would be covered by transfers from other accounts like the overlay and free cash and revenues raised by the department including fees and ambulance. Parents line up to be reunited with their children at the Stationery Factory, the school's emergency location. DALTON, Mass. — Pupils at Craneville Elementary School were evacuated from the school on Monday after two motors in the heating and ventilation system burnt out and sent smoke through the building. According to a message to parents from Superintendent of Schools Leslie Blake-Davis, staff noticed an odor at about 10:45 a.m. that "warranted a fire drill." Pittsfield's Striking Out Cancer Event Back for Third YearCommunity submission,

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Area baseball and softball players ages 13 and up are encouraged to participate in the third annual Striking Out Cancer in the Berkshires Event on Saturday, June 24. The day-long baseball and women's softball games will be played at Clapp Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A $10 donation gets you the opportunity to participate in the event. All proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Participants will receive a T-shirt to commemorate the event. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Dalton man, John Cicchetti, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after an early morning car accident Sunday. On May 7, 2023, at approximately 5:00 A.M., the Pittsfield Police Dept., Pittsfield Fire Dept. and Action Ambulance responded to 1050 Dalton Ave for a report of a head-on collision between two vehicles. A 2013 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Cameron Taylor-Boland, 28 years of age of Dalton, appeared to be traveling eastbound on Dalton Ave when he collided with a 2013 Toyota Camry operated by John Cicchetti, 78 years of age, who was traveling west bound. PITTSFIELD, Mass.— A temporary new traffic pattern will be in place on Fenn Street, between Allen Street and First Street, beginning on Monday, May 8 due to underground utility work conducted by Eversource. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2024 is almost $17,000,000, or 8.9 percent higher, than the previous year at $188,822,018. On Tuesday's City Council meeting agenda is an order to raise and appropriate a total of $205,634,497 for the FY24 budget beginning July 1. This begins the council's process of departmental spending deliberations with a budget adoption before the new fiscal year begins. Mayor Linda Tyer is proposing the use of $1 million in free cash to lower the tax rate.
The total budget also an enterprise total of $18,195,586, with $6,199,738 for DPU water treatment, $1,002,156 for sewer, and $10,993,692 for DPU

 DALTON, Mass. — The Crane Museum is looking for a new home to house its extensive collection gathered over the last hundred years. When Crane NXT separated from Crane Holdings, it upgraded all of its security operations, Crane Currency Global Marketing Director Tod Niedeck said. The museum is located at 32 Pioneer St. in an ivy-covered stone structure dating from 1844 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the rag room for the first Crane mills.  DALTON, Mass.—The Historical Commission is looking to have a copy of the book "Down Memory Lane" rebound. The book is a compiled series of weekly columns by the Rev. Franklin L. "Cap" Couch that appeared in the now defunct Dalton News Record from 1972 to 1977. The project would improve the accessibility of the book so that interested buyers can purchase it because finding a copy is difficult. There is a question who owns the copyright because the publisher, Berkshire Family History Association, compiled the columns from newspaper but the commission is unsure if it can republish it.
