 NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A Berkshire Community College graduate who went on to purse a doctorate in social work is this year's keynote speaker at the college's 63rd commencement ceremony at Tanglewood in Lenox on Friday, June 2, at 4 p.m. Edson Chipalo is a 2015 graduate of BCC who later earned his master of science in social work in 2018 from Columbia University. He recently defended his dissertation and is expected to be presented with his doctor of philosophy degree this May. He was born into poverty in Zambia and lost both of his parents when he was a young child. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, who were subsistence farmers. Driven 0 Comments

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city now has a potential candidate for Ward 2 and two with certified signatures.
Election papers became available on April 3 and there is now at least one interested candidate in all seven Wards. Incumbent Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey's 50 signatures within the ward have been certified and City Clerk Michele Benjamin's 150 signatures to run for re-election have been certified.
Hot Dog Ranch owner Craig Benoit has taken out papers for a Ward 2 and an at-large seat.
Benoit ran at large in the 2021 election, touting his experience as a small-business owner and his advocacy for other restaurants during the pandemic. He also placed a large emphasis on

Last month's inflation data came in the cooler. The dollar continued to decline, while stocks eked out some gains. Next up, first-quarter earnings results. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Berkshire Family and Individual Resources and Greylock Federal Credit Union are again partnering to raise awareness for National Brain Injury Awareness Month for the second year in a row. With support from the credit union, BFAIR will be distributing 250 bike helmets for children and adults to promote brain health and safety in Berkshire County. The distribution will take place Saturday, April 15, from 10 to 1 at the Ashuwilliticook Trail Head on the Connector Road, near the entrance to the former Berkshire Mall. DALTON, Mass. — The Dalton Green Committee voted to use ChargePoint for the electric vehicle (EV) charging stations during its meeting last week. The town allocated $42,000 to fund the Green Committee's request for two electric vehicle charging stations. There are two EV ports per station. The vendor who installs the stations and the Central Berkshire Regional Planning Commission did not recommend that the town use Flo, a Canadian company, committee member Tony Pagliarulo said. Berkshire Harm Reduction Program Manager Sarah DeJesus shows Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson the Narcan box set up outside the Senior Center. DALTON, Mass. — The town upped its harm reduction efforts on Thursday as it welcomed a Narcan box from Berkshire Harm Reduction, a program of Berkshire Health Systems. The first of 20 boxes around the county was installed outside of the senior center on Field Street, containing nine kits with two doses of the life-saving medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday voted to recommend that the Central Berkshire Regional School District hire a school resource officer. The Police Chief Deanna Strout advocated for this hire, saying it would make the school safer. Since Sept. 1 of this year, there have been 125 calls for service involving middle and high school students, she told the Select Board. Of those, 35 were for threats on social media, 23 for trespassing or noise disturbances, 16 for vandalism, 11 for theft, and nine school-related issues such as students walking out of school.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A number of public infrastructure projects were allocated money by the City Council on Tuesday.
Councilors voted to appropriate $7,500,000 from certified free cash for street and sidewalk improvements and borrow up to $400,000 under the Water Enterprise Fund Capital Expenditure to replace the water line on King Street.
Ward 3 Councilor Kevin Sherman successfully motioned to waive Rule 27 for both of the orders to streamline the process.
Six million dollars will be spent on resurfacing 13 miles of roadway on 45 streets and $1.5 million will fund a sidewalk project.
