Governor Files Legislation to Rename the Executive Office of Elder Affairs

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration filed legislation to rename the Executive Office of Elder Affairs to the Executive Office of Aging & Independence to better represent and reflect the values of older adults in Massachusetts.    This timing is part of the celebration of Older Americans Month, which takes place in May.     The proposed name change is part of the agency's ongoing efforts to expand its reach and ensure older people throughout Massachusetts can access needed information, services, and support through every stage of aging.      The name was selected following significant research that included focus groups, surveys,

Pittsfield Council OKs $3M Borrowing for Failing PHS Boilers

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council has authorized the borrowing of $3 million for new boilers at Pittsfield High School — a project that was originally going to be funded by ARPA.

The nearly 100-year-old boilers are original to the building and have exceeded their useful life, officials say. They are converted locomotive engines that are extremely inefficient and expensive to maintain.

The replacement design was recently completed and a low bid was received. After looking at the numbers, it was clear that the allocated $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds would not be enough.

Composting with Bears in Mind

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says many people are having problems with bears looking for food near their homes, and with the food scrap ban in effect the department is providing tips for people who are composting at home so they can avoid attracting hungry bears. 

"We have been receiving lots of reports of bears on decks, tearing down bird feeders, wrecking beehives, killing chickens, and getting into trash, compost and garbage containers," said bear biologist Jaclyn Comeau.  "We are offering some guidance on how to compost at home without attracting bears."

BCC Graduates Embraced for Varying Journeys to Degrees

LENOX, Mass. — Navigating community college was a different journey for each student but each path leads to the gratifying destination of a degree or certificate.

During Berkshire Community College's 64th commencement, 189 students graduated under sunny skies at Tanglewood. Nearly 30 different associate degrees and certificates totaling 191 were awarded to scholars of all ages and life experiences who are bound by their time at BCC.

New York Man Charged With Enticing a Child

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A 62-year-old New York State man was arraigned Friday for enticement of a child.    David Stypa was arrested on Thursday and charged with enticement of a child younger than 16; two counts of disseminating obscene matter to a minor; and attempt to commit a crime.    Stypa was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court in front of Judge Jennifer Tyne, who ordered he be held on $100,000 cash bail.   The defendent was arrested following an investigation into his online communications with a minor and is alleged to have been in communication with the child over online platforms. Berkshire Community College Degrees & Certificates for 2024

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College held its 64th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 31, at Tanglewood. The college awarded 152 associate degrees (including 105 associate in science degrees and 47 associate in arts degrees) and 39 certificates.     A total of 191 awards were conferred to 189 students in 36 programs of study. Pittsfield Council Cuts School Budget After 'Unprofessional' Comments

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council preliminarily approved a $216 million budget for fiscal year 2025 with a last-minute reduction to the schools.

The meeting took an unexpected twist when displeasure with comments made during a School Committee meeting last week was brought forward and councilors voted to reduce the district's $82 million budget by $200,000, dropping the proposed city budget to $215,955,210.

Library's Short Story Contest Begins June 1
