Fire Marshal Names New Fire Safety Division Director

STOW, Mass. — State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey welcomed Brian J. Ingram as director of the Fire Safety Division of the Department of Fire Services.   Ingram has more than 30 years of fire and life safety experience, including 15 years in managing fire safety at institutions of higher learning and more than 20 years as a firefighter.   "The Fire Safety Division intersects with the fire service, the public, and regulated industries on a daily basis to protect the Commonwealth's communities," said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey. Dalton Town Hall Work Progressing; July Completion Projected

DALTON, Mass. — There was a "minor glitch" in the work being done on Town Hall that has since been rectified.   Building Grounds Superintendent Patrick Pettit told the Select Board last week that he noticed  the abatement contractor missed a 3 1/2 by 8-foot section of plaster wall in the opera house. The wall had been under plastic.   After some investigation, it was determined the project supervisor at the start of the job had left for personal reasons. When a supervisor leaves, mistakes like this can happen because the incoming supervisor did not see it, Pettit said.     A construction meeting was held with all the contractors to come up

Governor Names Fish and Game Commissioner

BOSTON — Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper announced the appointment of Tom O'Shea to the role of Commissioner of the Department of Fish and Game (DFG).    DFG works to preserve the state's natural resources and protect and manage marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and the habitats that support them. O'Shea starts on May 1.   "DFG plays a unique and important role in merging nature and culture. With Tom O'Shea at the helm, Massachusetts will be better positioned to prepare for, recover from, and adapt to climate change while bolstering our habitat resilience," said EEA Secretary Rebecca Tepper.

MassDOT Encourages Drivers to Look Twice for Motorcycles

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is raising awareness for motorcyclist safety and urging drivers to be mindful that as the weather becomes warmer, more motorcyclists will begin traveling on roadways throughout the Commonwealth.

Pittsfield Celebrates Arbor Day at Springside Park

Landscape architect Martha Lyon speaks about the historical context of trees at Friday's Arbor Day celebration in Pittsfield.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Springside Park gained a red oak tree on Friday as the community celebrated Arbor Day.   Over the next 20 years, it will absorb about 900 pounds of carbon dioxide and release upwards of 260 pounds of oxygen a year.   The tree was donated by the Conway School of Landscape Design in Northampton in honor of its 50th anniversary and replaces one that fell down during a windstorm last about a year ago.   "This new red oak is our replacement oak and will forever be that tree planted during Arbor Day 2023 here at

Governor Launches Commission on Clean Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting

BOSTON — Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca L. Tepper today announced the establishment of the Commission on Clean Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting (CEISP) and the Interagency Offshore Wind Council (IOWC).    To meet the emissions limits outlined in the Clean Energy and Climate Plans (CECP), Massachusetts will need to site a significant amount of new energy infrastructure, including new solar and wind generation, storage, transmission, and distribution infrastructure throughout the Commonwealth. Dalton to Vote FY24 Budget, Spending Items at May 1 Town Meeting

DALTON, Mass. — Fewer than a dozen voters attended Monday's review of the town meeting warrant in advance of next week's annual town meeting, Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Regional High School.    Town meeting will be asked to authorize a number of spending articles, including a $21 million budget. One Dead in Cummington House Fire

CUMMINGTON, Mass. — An early morning fire on Friday claimed one adult resident's life and injured another.   The identity of the fatality had not been released. A joint press release was issued by Cummington Fire Chief Adam E. Dragon, State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Northwestern District Attorney David E.
