State Fire Marshal Highlights Summer Fire Safety

STOW, Mass. — As Massachusetts approaches Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine is asking residents to practice outdoor fire safety in the weeks and months ahead.

"As the weather gets warmer and we start spending more time outside, outdoor fires also start to increase," State Fire Marshal Davine said. "Unfortunately, many of these fires cause serious injuries and property damage – but almost all of them can be prevented."

BEAT Queries Residents on Future of Pittsfield Peaker Plant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Environmentalists continue to push for the decarbonization of the last peaker plant in Berkshire County.

On Tuesday, the Berkshire Environmental Action Team solicited feedback about the future of Pittsfield Generating Co. at Allendale Elementary School, which neighbors the power plant.  

Talks about transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy with battery storage are underway between the owners, state agencies, and other stakeholders.  BEAT will present data from this meeting to inform the conversation.

State Invests in Berkshire County Youth Employment and Skills Training

Pittsfield Council Preliminarily OKs School Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council kicked off budget season on Wednesday with a preliminary approval of the Pittsfield Public Schools' $86 million spending plan.

The $86,450,361 budget for fiscal year 2026 includes an $18 million city contribution and more than $68 million of anticipated Chapter 70 funding. It is a $3,765,084 increase from FY25, totaling $86,900,361 with $450,000 in school choice and Richmond tuition funds.

"The Pittsfield Public School system is in a vital place in time," Mayor Peter Marchetti said.
