Pittsfield Interviewing 4 for Interim Superintendent

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Four external candidates for Pittsfield's interim superintendent will be interviewed this week.

They are Roland Joyal Jr., Latifah Phillips, Robert Putnam, and Mary Jane Rickson. Outgoing Superintendent Joseph Curtis will step down on July 1 after 30 years with the district.

On Tuesday, School Committee Chair William Cameron reported via email that 11 applications were submitted to the Massachusetts Association of School Committees for the one-year interim superintendent position.

Pittsfield Homeless Advisory Committee to Host Housing Resource Fair

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The City of Pittsfield's Homeless Advisory Committee will host a Housing Resource Fair on Thursday, May 8, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Persip Park on North Street.   In the event of inclement weather, the fair will be relocated to the main room of the Berkshire Athenaeum during the same hours. The purpose of the fair is to provide information and assistance to community members seeking stable and secure housing.

Downtown Pittsfield 'Flying and Flourishing' With New Mural

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Burbank Place now has two murals bringing it to life through a public art partnership.

On Friday, the Pittsfield Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership debuted "Flying and Flourishing" in the corridor. Just steps from a tile mural debuted last year, this colorful work showcases the synergy of flowers and insects.

Pittsfield High School students worked with artist in residence Huck Elling and public art intern Sophie Possick twice a week over the winter to create the three-part mural hanging in former window arches.

Pittsfield: Wild Acres Fishing Derby

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (April 28, 2025) - The City of Pittsfield's Conservation Commission, Recreation Program and Lyon Aviation have announced a free Fishing Derby for youth ages 14 years old and under on Saturday, May 10, at the Wild Acres Conservation Area (rain or shine).   Volunteer support will be provided by the Onota Fishing Club to assist with dressing fish, providing fishing tips and techniques, baiting, etc. The derby will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until noon. Trophies will be awarded during a ceremony between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to those who catch the largest fish (length & weight).   The Onota Boat Livery has donated fishing poles as part of a giveaway

Bishop Earns Conference Honor at St. Michael's

St. Michael's College first-year catcher and Drury High School graduate Brooke Bishop was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week in mid-April.   Bishop went .389 at the plate with a .667 slugging percentage and .450 on-base percentage in a 3-3 week for the Purple Knights to earn the honor on April 21.   Last week, St. Michael's was eliminated in the NE10 tournament with a 2-0 loss to top-seed Pace, the No. 15-ranked team in Division II at the time.   Needing two wins against Pace to advance in the tourney, St. Michael's won Game 1, when Bishop went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Dalton Nixes Police Budget, High School Site Change; Suspends Town Meeting

DALTON, Mass. — With another dozen articles still left, voters elected just before 11 p.m. to suspend the annual town meeting and reconvene on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.    Some 277 registered voters got through 19 of 31 articles on the warrant over four hours of debate, rejecting both the police budget and a proposal to rescind a housing stipulation at the old high school site.   Voters spent more than an hour on Article 3, to raise and appropriate $11,048,759 for the fiscal 2026 operating budget.    Their main concerns stemmed from the Police Department budget of $1,665 million, up $129,668 over this year.   That line was pulled from the operating budget on

Pittsfield Announces Phase Three of Spring Hydrant Flushing Schedule

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The City of Pittsfield's water system will begin phase three of its spring flushing schedule on Monday, May 5.

Water mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, excluding holidays, between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. This phase is anticipated to last from May 5 to May 9.

On Monday only, early morning flushing will also occur from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. The affected area includes South Street from the intersection of South Street and East Housatonic Street to Park Square; North Street from Park Square to Wahconah Street; and Wahconah Street from North Street to Charles Street.

BRTA Studying Microtransit for County

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority is looking over a new project to bring microtransit to the county.   The study was done by the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and FoursquareITP (Integrated Transportation Planning) and presented recently to the BRTA board by project manager Jessica Klion .    She stated that the county is facing challenges to provide comprehensive and effective transit service for all of its residents and visitors as public transportation mainly focused on more developed areas.   Microtransit would include more coverage than a fixed-route service and would have a similar interface as the Uber and Lyft apps. Adult female deer, called does, typically give birth to 1–3 baby fawns each year. Most are born in May and June; however, fawns can be born in Massachusetts any time between April and September. Healthy fawns weigh about 4-9 pounds at birth and can walk within an hour. During their first couple of months, fawns spend most of their time away from their mothers. This separation protects the fawns, who are not yet strong enough to flee from predators that may be attracted to the mother. Let's take a closer look at the normal phases of fawn and doe behavior:

Pittsfield School Committee Adopts $86M Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield Public School's budget for the upcoming fiscal year includes added communication supports and a special project manager.

The School Committee on Wednesday adopted a $86,450,361 budget for fiscal year 2026 that includes an $18 million city contribution and more than $68 million of anticipated Chapter 70 funding.

It is a $3,765,084 increase from this year. With $450,000 in school choice and Richmond tuition funds, it totals $86,900,361.

While the bottom line stayed the same, this iteration of the budget accommodates the School Committee's two requests, reallocating $20,000 for contracted communications services and $80,000 for a special project
