Dalton Planning Board Works to Update ADU Bylaw
By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
05:52AM / Monday, December 30, 2024
DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board agreed to amend its Accessory Dwelling Unit bylaw one step at a time.    During a meeting last month, the board decided to focus on updating the bylaw to comply with state law before presenting the idea of including mobile/movable tiny houses.    This decision was made because many aspects need to be considered when addressing tiny mobile houses, and it could potentially be a more controversial item for voters.    Board members said separating the ADU bylaw from the mobile/movable tiny house regulation would prevent confusion because it would allow each issue to be addressed clearly and distinctly.   Amending the

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After just one season, Pittsfield's Clapp Park Little Sled Library has encountered vandalism.    In December 2023, the city approved a community-led sled library to help spread the joy of winter activities.   After receiving city approval, resident Lindsey Marion placed a free sled box near the scoreboard at the park, which holds a collection of sleds that visitors can borrow and use on the property's impressive hills.    However, last week, the Clapp Park Little Sled Library's Facebook page announced that all but one of the library's 20-plus sleds were damaged or gone.    "We can do better than this. @theMarket: Wall Street Sees Another Positive Year Ahead
By Bill Schmick,
04:11PM / Friday, December 27, 2024
It is a time when financial strategists and economic experts forecast what will happen in the coming year. Since most of Wall Street is trying to sell you something, prepare for a positive outlook from most firms.   On practically the same date last year, I wrote that strategists were predicting the 2024 S&P 500 Index targets ranged from 4,200 to 5,500. Given that over a long period, the S&P 500 has delivered around 10.13 percent yearly returns since 1957, and 9.19 percent over the last 150 years, forecasts that mimic those returns should be ignored.   Those forecasts told me the authors had no idea where the market was going.  As such, they just took the historical

Christian Tobin is sworn in as fire chief in January after nearly a year of turmoil in the department. But Tobin also found himself on the outs when he was suspended in August.   DALTON, Mass. — Dalton had several controversial situations this year including a demonstration of the dilapidated police station, the suspension of a fire chief and accusations of an unexplainable debt in the Fire District.    There were also substantial strides made including progress on the town's climate action plan, historical initiatives, initiating a feasibility study to determine long-term options for a new police station, and more.    Here is what happened in

The Retired Investor: The Billionaire Trump team
By Bill Schmick,
04:15PM / Thursday, December 26, 2024
Last week, billionaire Stephen Feinberg of the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management was selected to fill the No. 2 spot at the Defense Department. That brings the number of billionaires who have agreed to join Donald Trump's second term to an even dozen. Should you be worried?   The wealth and business background of these individuals have sparked concerns that the next four years will favor business interests and those of the wealthy above all else. If we include Trump, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy, the total thus far would be 15. At last count, U.S. News and World Report estimated that the total net worth of these billionaires as of Dec. 10 was more than $382 billion.
