@theMarket: Economy Still Growing Strong While Inflation Slowing

U.S. first quarter Gross Domestic Product for 2023 was revised upward this week indicating that consumers are spending like drunken sailors. That's good for America as was the latest inflation data for May.   Between January and March of this year, the economy grew at a 2 percent annual pace. That caused the Commerce Department to sharply upgrade its previous yearly estimate of 1.3 percent. Although strong, it has continued to decelerate from a 3.2 percent growth rate in the third quarter of 2022 and a 2.6 percent increase in the last quarter of 2022.   Despite rising borrowing costs, the consumer continued to defy expectations. Governor Appoints New Members to the Convention Center Authority Board of Directors

CHESHIRE, Mass. — Cheshire junior firefighters do more than just learn about firefighting — they're active, needed participants in emergency situations.   "We are in these emergency situations and it is real. In the real world when there is an emergency most people freak out," junior firefighter Christy Rech said. Rose Homers as North Adams Wins Fourth Straight

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Cedric Rose homered and drove in a pair of runs Friday as the North Adams SteepleCats beat the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.   The Taconic High School graduate raised his batting average to .273 in three games this season for the SteepleCats as North Adams won its fourth straight game.   Samuel Tackett went 2-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs, and Tremayne Cobb Jr. went 3-for-4 in a 14-hit attack.   Nathaniel Chudy struck out nine and allowed one run in five innings to earn the win on the mound.   North Adams (5-12) goes to Danbury, Conn., for a double-header on Saturday.

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board was given updates on a variety of projects and bids during its meeting on Monday night including, the Bardin Property bid, sidewalk repairs, and Town Hall renovations.    Bardin Property Update    The town has received its first bid for the Bardin Property from Charlotte Crane, Town Manager Tom Hutcheson said.    Crane bid $150,000 and meets all the requirements of the request for proposals.    Hutcheson said he is planning on declaring her the winning bid pending a final review from town counsel.    Town counsel will notify the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources in accordance with the

Junior Rangers Program at Mount Greylock

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Mount Greylock State Reservation announced the Junior Ranger program for children ages 8-12.

The program is free and is held at Mount Greylock State Reservation, Pittsfield State Forest, Clarksburg State Park, Natural Bridge State Park, Savoy Mountain State Forest, and Mohawk Trail State Forest, on specific Thursdays in July and August from 10:00am to noon. 

Space is limited to fifteen participants. All participants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Canadian Wildfires Cause Air Quality Advisory in Berkshire County

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Due to smoke from Canadian wildfires that continue to influence the area, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has posted an air quality alert effective until 11:59 p.m. on June 30, 2023, in five counties in western and central Massachusetts.    Smoke is expected to impact air quality tomorrow in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester counties. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Pittsfield School Administrators Tasked With Cell Phone Intervention Plan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — While the district has a straightforward cell phone policy, it has never had a set of uniform practices throughout the schools. The School Committee would like to change that.

On Wednesday the committee requested that Superintendent Joseph Curtis review the existing policy and bring it back in August with added regulations.

Chair William Cameron, who motioned for the request, said he is not looking to change the rule because it is clear. In Pittsfield Public Schools, devices are to be turned off and not used during the instructional day or a school-sponsored activity or program.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Fourth of July Parade is just days away from marching down North Street in front of thousands of paradegoers from around the region.    The Pittsfield Parade Committee has selected retiring Police Chief Michael Wynn as this year's grand marshal.    Every year, the independent committee tries to bring new things to the event, Chairman Peter Marchetti said.    It made a concerted effort this year to work with other organizations like Downtown Pittsfield Inc. to expand the Independence Day activities throughout the Fourth of July week.    From June 30 until July 9, residents can celebrate Independence Day with events

Museum Set to Open in Lee, Seeks Volunteers
