The Retired Investor: Return of the 60/40 Portfolio

Most people think of stocks when financial markets are mentioned. That is where the action is and where the big money is made. That may be so, but investors should not ignore the promise of the bond market.   In my graduate school days, a required subject was Modern Portfolio Theory. Its author, Harry Markowitz, who, back in the '50s, proposed that the optimal portfolio for most risk-adjusted investors was 60 percent U.S. stocks and 40 percent U.S. Treasury bonds. The idea was that these two asset classes were negatively correlated, meaning that if stocks went down, bond prices would increase and vice versa. Pittsfield UNICO Awards 2024 Scholarships

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Chapter of UNICO National held its scholarship awards ceremony on July 23 at the Italian American Club.    Since 1987 UNCO has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to students from Berkshire County high schools. The UNICO Scholarship Committee, chaired by Julia Salatino, awarded $19,000 in scholarships this year to local high school graduates who are continuing their postsecondary education.   Scholarship Recipients   Alexandra Bills of Wahconah Regional High School received the the Gloria Powers Scholarship. PITTSFIELD , Mass. — An electric fourth inning from Jason Codey, Gavin O’Donnell, and Connor Devine Thursday gave the Pittsfield Post 68 Juniors a 10-0, mercy rule win over Wilbraham and a berth in the state championship tournament.   Pittsfield's offense made a statement against Wilbraham with consecutive innings of extra base hits.   The momentum was not on Wilbraham’s side, not being able to record many base runners until late in the game.   Jason Codey was on his 'A' game, recording two extra base hits accounting for four of his team's pitching strikeouts. Dalton CRA Electric Vehicle Chargers Installed; Waiting to be Energized

DALTON, Mass. — Electric vehicle users will soon have another charging option at the Community Recreation Association.    The hardware for the level 2 station was installed earlier this month but has not yet been connected.    Eversource will be inspecting the station this week, and once that is complete, the chargers should be energized within three to four weeks, Eversource spokesperson Priscilla Ress said.    The Green Committee has been working to install two level-two charging stations but ran into delays due to paperwork requirements for the state Department of Environmental Protection, Committee member Antonio Pagliarulo said in a previous

District Attorney's Office Reports a Rise in Senior Citizen Scams

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office is alerting residents to an overall increase in scams targeting senior citizens.    On Oct. 3, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney's Office, will hold two informational sessions on senior fraud. One event will take place in North Adams (location TBD) and the other will occur at the Lenox Community Center. BCC Names Spring Dean's List Students

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced it has named 391 students to the spring 2024 dean's list.     To be eligible for the dean's list, students must achieve a GPA of 3.750 to 4.000 to earn high honors, while students with a GPA of 3.250 to 3.749 earn an honors designation. Pittsfield's Sibaritas Restaurant Moving Downtown

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After three years in business on East Street, Sibaritas is moving downtown.

On Monday, the Licensing Board approved a new annual downtown all-alcohol restaurant license for the eatery's new location in the former Trattoria Rustica at 27 McKay St.

"I couldn't be happier for you," board member Jon Lifergren said. "I think it's a win-win move and I'm really excited about it."

Other board members agreed and Chair Thomas Campoli coined the East Street operation as a "wild success."

Subcommittee Mulls Pittsfield Schools' Cell Phone Policy

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  A school official drifted into a "chicken or the egg?" direction regarding the negative implications of cell phones during a policy meeting. 

"I understand where the cell phone mental health issue is coming from and I do think a lot of it is social media driven," said School Committee member William Garrity, who is two years out of high school.
