BCC '40 Under Forty' Awards to Resume Spring Schedule | 01:49PM / Wednesday, February 01, 2023 | |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced it will host its 40 Under Forty awards in March 2024. The hiatus in 2023 will allow the event to get back on track after its annual springtime schedule was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the last two years, the event was held in September, whereas it historically takes place in March. The College plans to resume the springtime schedule, resetting the event with nominations opening this fall. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 2nd Street, together with Community Legal Aid and the Committee for Public Counsel Services, will hold a free clinic on how to seal or expunge a criminal record on Friday, Feb. 10 from 1:30-3 pm. The clinic will be held at the 2nd Street offices, located at 264 Second Street, Pittsfield. Private consultations will be available. The clinic is designed for those who have either never been found guilty of a charge or who have fulfilled the requirements of a guilty plea or verdict.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In a historic move fueled by the growing demand for skilled tradespeople and the evolution of career technical education, the School Committee has decided that Taconic is a solely vocational school. On Tuesday, the committee unanimously voted to start the school's transition to all vocational, only accepting Career Technical Education (CTE) students beginning in the fall. The motion was followed by a round of applause.
All new non-CTE students will attend Pittsfield High School and Taconic's remaining non-CTE students in Grades 10-12 will graduate as usual. The class of 2027 will be the first all-technical class to graduate.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Heidi Kushi pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny and was sentenced to state prison. On Monday, Jan. 30, Heidi Kushi, 57 years old of Pittsfield, pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny by single scheme. She was indited in July of 2019. The defendant was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in state prison, both counts concurrent, by Judge Agostini. Kushi, who began working for Donovan Construction in June 2013 as their accountant/bookkeeper, stole $138,772.72 during her time at the company. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With all licensing secured, Hot Plate Brewery will have a soft opening on Thursday. Owners Sarah Real and Mike Dell'Aquila will debut the micro-brewery to the public with six beers on tap starting at 4 p.m.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., transplants began planning their venture in the Berkshires two years ago, saying that the region seemed underserved from a craft beer perspective. "Hot Plate" was inspired by the equipment that the couple used to brew beer in the city when they lost heat and hot water for three years because of a code violation.
On Monday, Licensing Board granted Hot Plate a weekday (Monday through Saturday) and Sunday entertainment license.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — "Stars, Stripes, and Smiles in the Berkshires" was chosen as the theme for the line of march for the next Fourth of July Parade. Parade Committee Chairman Peter Marchetti said about 17 ideas were tossed out by the committee. "All were good but we try to use a litmus test that works for all units and the judges on the reviewing stand," he said. On January 30, 2023, at approximately 9:13 am police, firefighters, and Action Ambulance responded to the 300 West St. area for a Pittsfield woman struck by a car. A 2015 Toyota Yaris operated by Loraine Utter, an 84-year-old Pittsfield resident, was traveling west on West St. in the 300 block when she struck two pedestrians who were crossing near Dorothy Amos Park. DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted to hold off on offering early voting by mail or in person for for the local election on May 8. The town had "successfully" implemented these practices as required during the September state primary election and November general election. However, towns and cities may opt out of early voting in municipal elections after a public hearing and vote 45 days prior to the election. Police are investigating a shooting at Zen's Pub that left one person hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries On Friday, Jan. 27, just after 10:30 pm officers with the Pittsfield Police Department responded to Zen’s Pub located at 303 Tyler Street for an incident involving multiple people.
