BCC to Hold Wellness Day

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) will hold Wellness Day on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 from 10 am – 2 pm at the Paterson Field House on the main campus, located at 1350 West Street in Pittsfield.   The event is hosted by BCC's Physical Therapist Assistant program.    Kicking off Wellness Day at 10 am are a 5K run, 1-mile walk and a kids' race, along with chair massages (for a nominal fee) and educational booths promoting self-care and care for your loved ones. Parks Commission Endorses Wahconah Park Designer

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Parks Commission has endorsed a designer for Wahconah Park's revitalization.

During a special meeting on Wednesday, the panel voted to hire S3 Design Inc. of Braintree for the restoration or rebuild of Pittsfield's historic baseball park. The owner's project manager will now negotiate a scope of work and price proposal before a contract is signed.

A subcommittee tasked with designer selection unanimously voted to recommend the firm last week after a request for proposals generated four responses.

"They stood out significantly from the others in a couple of ways," Commissioner Anthony DeMartino said.

Dalton Historical Commission Wants a Home for Its Collection

DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission wants to find a location to display its artifacts and documents for the community.    The commission has a wide range of items that it has obtained over the years, including sports memorabilia, a World War 1 uniform, government documents, pictures, and more.    Chair Deborah Kovacs said Select Board Chair Joe Diver had recommended the commissioners consider displaying some of its pieces at the schools.    The commissioners liked that idea because it would provide students with the opportunity to learn about their town's history.    But some were concerned about the items' safety. Pittsfield School Committee Digs Into FY24 Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The superintendent last week defended the need for a co-principal at Morningside Community School at a cost of $105,000.   Superintendent Joseph Curtis told the School Committee at public hearing on the $78 million budget that the last time there was a co-principal at the elementary school, it was himself. Lanesborough to Re-establish Public Safety Building Committee

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After the town rejected a nearly $6 million police and EMS building proposal, the Select Board is preparing to start at square one in solving its problem of insufficient accommodations.

On Tuesday, the panel voted to push the application deadline for a reinstated public safety building committee out for one week.

Town Administrator Gina Dario reported that almost all of the standing members have resigned from the committee. 

Voting members included Chair Kristen Tool, William Cook, Bill Mahon, Glen Storie, and William Calderwood. Dario believes that Tool remains.

BCC Trustees OK Water Quality Monitoring Certificate Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College will offer a new certification for environmentalists interested in water quality.

Last week, the Board of Trustees approved a request for a new 11-credit Water Quality Monitoring certificate program.

Bruce Winn, associate professor of environmental and life sciences, said the Berkshire Environmental Action Team, the Housatonic Valley Association, and the Hoosac River Watershed Association came to the college asking for training in monitoring and assessing surface water and outfalls in the county.

Pittsfield Boy Competes in Legoland's First Junior Competition

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Owen Burgess can take a box of blocks and turn them into anything from magical trees to dinosaurs.    That skill won him a spot in the finals of Legoland New York's first Junior Master Model Builder Competition this past weekend.   "I'm excited because I'm actually one of the top five people at Lego building. RSVP of Berkshire County celebrates 50 years of Service

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Berkshire County (RSVP) will mark 50 years of service throughout the county with the event, “50 Years and Counting,” on Wednesday, April 12, in the auditorium at the Berkshire Athenaeum, 1 Wendell Ave.   The event, which will be held from 1-3 p.m., is free and open to the public. Man Pleads Guilty To St. Joseph's Church Door Burning

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, April 3, Michael Innis pleaded guilty to Burn Building and Destruction of Place of Worship in Berkshire Superior Court.    Judge Flannery sentenced Innis to 2.5-3.5 years in state prison. The Commonwealth recommended 3 to 4 years in state prison. The defense recommended 2.5 years in the House of Corrections.   On August 4, 2021, Michael Innis, who was 53 at the time, and a second defendant were discovered to have set fire to the south facing door of St. Joseph's Church. Damage caused by the fire was estimated to be over $10,000.    The second defendant's case is pending.   Pittsfield Police investigated the crime.

Special Meeting Called for Wahconah Park Designer Recommendation

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A special Parks Commission meeting will be held Wednesday to vote on recommended designer services for the redo of Wahconah Park.
