PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A study on establishing a "baby bonds" program will be released on Monday during a virtual event beginning at noon. State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg convened a Baby Bonds Task Force earlier this year to explore the creation of the bonds in Massachusetts. The release of the findings is open to the public; register here. Baby bonds is a term used to describe trust funds set up by governments intended to build assets for low-to-moderate income residents and narrow the racial wealth gap. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Western Massachusetts Passenger Rail Commission is holding a public meeting on Friday on plans for east/west passenger rail. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Berkshire Innovation Center on Woodlawn Avenue. It is open to the public and comments will be taken following the membership discussion. This is the first of six public meetings and likely the only one to be held in the Berkshires. The commission was established in Chapter 176 of the Acts of 2022 and is co-chaired by state Rep.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission on Monday deemed two fiscal 2023 Community Preservation Act applications as historically significant: a Fenn Street building restoration and a West Pittsfield signage project. Nonprofit organization Roots Dreams and Mustard Seeds is seeking $200,000 to support its renovation of 117 to 129 Fenn St. into a community support and educational facility.
The property includes a 19th-century home that was formerly a Union For Home Work space and a more modern, three-part storefront. The plan is to utilize two of the storefronts and the home when it is available.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Around 50 people gathered at Veterans Memorial Park to mark the 81st anniversary of the attack on the naval base and airfield at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that sparked the nation's entrance into World War II. "On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day we pay tribute to the souls lost over 80 years ago," Director of Veterans Services Jim Clark said.
"We salute those who responded with strength and courage in service that our nation and renew our dedication to the ideals for which they stood for."
The attack claimed the lives of more than 2,400 Americans including two Pittsfield residents: Petty Officer 3rd Class Roman Sadlowski and Army Air

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Holiday Shindy returns to the Zion Lutheran Church on First Street this year with new and longtime vendors. On Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., shoppers can browse from around 40 artisans offering apparel and accessories, art, homewares, toys, stationery, body care, and food products.
The market has a common theme of sustainability. Crafters from across the region set up picturesque displays that channel holiday cheer.
