Pittsfield Seeks Community Input with Digital Equity Survey

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ensuring residents can use the Internet to conduct activities of daily life from finding a job to reaching their doctor or connecting with family is the focus of a new project the city is launching: The Pittsfield Digital Equity Plan.   Earlier this spring, the City of Pittsfield was selected to participate in the Municipal Digital Equity Planning Program launched by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI). Market 32 Raises Money to Fight Rare Disease

Governor Signs Bill to Improve Transportation Across Massachusetts

AMESBURY, Mass. — Governor Maura T. Healey signed the Chapter 90 conference committee bill ("Chapter 90"), which authorizes $375 million in funding to reimburse municipalities for bridge and road maintenance and funding for transportation-related infrastructure grants.    Governor Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Secretary Gina Fiandaca celebrated the bill signing at events in Lowell and Amesbury.    "This Chapter 90 bill will deliver funds straight to municipalities to support projects that we know are critical to their economic development, including bridge and road maintenance,

Fitch Hoose House Museum in Need of a Paint Job

DALTON, Mass. — The Fitch-Hoose House museum is in need of a paint job.   Historical Commission co-Chair Louisa M. Horth said at Wednesday's meeting that the paint is starting to peel and weather, and would need to be repainted this year or next year.   Commissioners are unsure how much the project would cost but will approach Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson to inquire on the best way to get funding for the project.    In 2014, the Historical Commission got a grant from the "Promoting Community Development and Tourism in Central and Western Massachusetts" program in the amount of $180,000 grant to restore the 1840s-era house.    The back

Tuesday, August 8: Pave first course blacktop on Cloverdale Street Wednesday, August 9: Finish first course Cloverdale Street and start first course on Tamarack Rd. Thursday, August 11: Pave first course on Lucia Drive and Quirico Drive This work will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is subject to change based on weather or other unexpected circumstances.   On-street parking is prohibited between the hours of 6 a.m.- 6 p.m.   Use caution when traveling on these roads.

Governor Signs Supplemental Budget Delivering $20M in Farm Relief

BOSTON — Governor Maura T. Healey signed a supplemental budget that makes $20 million available to support Massachusetts farms that have been impacted by severe weather in 2023.    The fund will be administered by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Executive Office of Administration and Finance. The administration is working to stand up a grant program to get relief out as soon as possible.    "In the days following the heavy rainfall and severe flooding the devastated so many Massachusetts farms, the Lieutenant Governor and I went directly to the farmers and promised them that we would get them relief," said Governor Healey.

Pittsfield Library Launches Teen Advisory Board

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Athenaeum is establishing a Teen Advisory Board to facilitate the involvement of young residents in their community. 

The panel of 13- to 18-year-old volunteers will take the lead on generating ideas, implementing programs, and promoting youth library services. Meetings will begin in September.

Currently in the planning stages, the board was prioritized in the library's strategic plan. Young Adult Librarian Vanessa Justice, who has been at the library for about a month, found it an important item to address.

Dalton Zoning Board Talks Conflict of Interest Policy

DALTON, Mass. — A discussion was introduced on enacting conflicts of interest policies for all committees and boards during the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting on Tuesday night.    The conversation was following the announcement that the town's insurer, Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, inquired whether the board had specific written policies and procedures in place to help avoid conflicts of interest.    Although board members complete Berkshire Regional Planning Commission's conflicts-of-interest training, the committee does not have written policies, member Caleb Darby said.    Even though it doesn't have an official policy,

Tenth Year of Berkshire Pottery Tour

Pittsfield Animal Commission Votes to Put Down 2 Dogs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Animal Control Commission voted to euthanize two Dartmouth Street dogs after a man's encounter with them required surgery.

By a majority vote, the panel decided that two pit bulls owned by Matthew Jacobs are dangerous and should be put down to prevent further incidents.  

Not much is known about the dogs, as the owner did not attend the meeting, and to the commission's knowledge they do not have a record. The decision was based on the severity of the allegations.
