DALTON, Mass. — Prudential Committee Chair Daniel Filiault straight off clarified at Tuesday morning's meeting that the board would not be discussing a requested forensic audit requested by Fire Chief Christian Tobin. Tobin was suspended earlier this month over allegations of sexual harassment, grant overspending, and "employee concerns." The agenda posted on Aug. 15 included two items: general business and a discussion of the duties of the Water Commissioners and Prudential Committee. BCC Extends One Stop Enrollment Center Hours 10:51AM / Wednesday, August 21, 2024 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass — In preparation for the fall semester, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 3, Berkshire Community College (BCC) announces a temporary extension of One Stop Enrollment Center hours. In addition to its normal hours of 8 am – 4 pm Monday through Friday, One Stop will be open until 6 pm Monday through Thursday from Aug. 19 through Sept. 10. On Thursday, Aug. 29, Student Orientation Day, One Stop will be open until 8 pm. Councilor at Large Earl Persip III was the lone vote in opposition to utility pole petitions from Eversource and Verizon New England on Tuesday night. The companies plan to install one new pole, relocate two existing poles, and set two anchor poles on Peck's Road for the Onota Brook bridge replacement. Roberta Steele and her niece, Kathleen Winterstein, who lives in Utah, have been working since June to develop a plan to address the home's condition, but because of family emergencies, they have been unable to complete all the needed work. Neighbors claim that rats have infested their homes, coming from the "abandoned" property and the unkept grass in the back yard.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city thought it was in the clear for zebra mussels — until last week. The public is asked to be vigilant about washing recreation equipment that has come in contact with Onota Lake. The city announced on Friday that the invasive species had been observed at the lake by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. "This discovery was made as part of regular monitoring of the lake for these types of invasive species," wrote Catherine VanBramer, director of administrative services. Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile Virus In Pittsfield03:40PM / Monday, August 19, 2024 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a positive result of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the weekly samples of mosquitoes collected in the City of Pittsfield. One positive sample was taken from the site of Pittsfield Municipal Airport.  The exhibit is being extended into September to display more of Hoose's fall and winter scenes. DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission has designated August as George Hoose Art Month at the Fitch-Hoose House and is showcasing some of the painter's work. The 1846 house is the last remaining home of Dalton's early Black residential neighborhood. A wide range of information has been gathered surrounding the Hoose family that is also on display. The small two-story building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is believed to have been active on the Underground Railroad. George Hoose died in 1977 at age 80.
