BOSTON — Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper announced the appointment of Ashley E. Randle to the role of Commissioner of the Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR). Randle starts on March 6, 2023, as the twenty-first Commissioner and the first woman appointed to lead the Department. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, Feb. 27 Raphael Ellison, 68 years old, was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Callahan on five counts stemming from an incident on Nov. 11, 2020 at a residence on Linden Street. On the evening of the incident, Ellison attacked and then threatened an individual he used to have a romantic relationship. Ellison was in the process of moving out of the apartment he shared with the victim when he first assaulted her. A neighbor called the police who then removed Ellison from the apartment. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Planning Commission continues to brainstorm solutions for municipal staffing issues — even within its own organization. On Thursday, the Executive Committee discussed possible staff advancement opportunities. BRPC currently has two policies: one that allows all staff up to $500 and 21 hours per year for development not covered by a project contract and a "professional development program" that allows permanent staff with five years of experience up to $1,500 per year for training and education to advance their professional development.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) announced it has approved additional reductions in gas supply rates for Eversource Gas of Massachusetts and Boston Gas Company d/b/a National Grid gas customers. On average, the decreases will result in a monthly bill decrease of about 10 percent for a typical residential heating customer. Eversource serves approximately 300,000 customers, and National Grid serves approximately 950,000 customers. Beginning on March 1, 2023, customers served by the companies can expect lower gas supply rates, which last until May 1. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With a new shelter on the horizon, the Homelessness Advisory Committee wants to address the issue of pet ownership in temporary housing. On Wednesday, the panel decided to create a subcommittee to brainstorm solutions for unhoused residents with furry friends.
"One of the barriers to sheltering folks, not just housing them but even sheltering folks, are pets," Chair Kim Borden said.
"Sometimes that pet is the one stable piece in their life and for whatever reason, that can be their saving grace, that's their only companionship, but it's a barrier to them being able to go into a shelter."

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) announced today that Massachusetts has been awarded $1,410,222 to expand the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). The award was granted by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The $1.4 million grant award will allow MDAR to increase the level of benefit for seniors participating in the SFMNP from $25 to $50.
