Pittsfield COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations RiseBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — COVID-19 cases continue to rise after a surge that pushed the city into the "red zone." Hospitalizations have also increased. On Sunday, the percent positivity rate was 12.4 and there were 106 cases per 100,000 people. This is a stark contrast to the positivity rate of 2.1 in late March, when there were only about 13 cases per 100,000 people. Berkshire County reported 342 new cases on Monday, which includes cases from over the weekend. There are currently 17 people hospitalized at Berkshire Medical Center who have tested positive for the virus, which is a rise from early last week when there were 14 and then seven hospitalizations. DALTON, Mass. — The Finance Committee approved more than $100,000 in departmental transfers to cover costs for vacation and overtime for the Police Department. The approvals were made at the committee's April 27 meeting so they could be done before the end of the month to pay bills. Approved was transfer of $40,700 from the Vocational Education line and $57,500 from the Communication Salary budget to the salary budget to accommodate overtime and vacation time. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society (BCHS), located at Herman Melville's historic Arrowhead, will open its summer season on May 14 offering guided tours of the historic house Thursday through Monday beginning at 10 am. Currently tours are available on Saturdays only.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city's warming shelter located at the Christian Center will be closing at the end of May after opening last year. Its last day of operation will be on May 27 and the structure itself will be removed on June 3.
"I just wanted to make you aware that the warming shelter is closing the first week of June," Director of Community Development Justine Dodds reported to the Homelessness Advisory Committee on Wednesday.

Lanesborough Selectmen Order Demolition of Abandoned Building By Brian Rhodes, iBerkshires Staff

 LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Board of Selectmen has voted to order the demolition of an abandoned house at 310 North Main St. after urging from Board of Health Inspector Cal Joppru.
"The house has to come down. It's in terrible shape," Joppru said before the Selectmen prior to the board's vote last week. The order stipulates the property owner has 30 days to demolish the building.
Joppru said he condemned the building in 2016, but because of various solar projects and the COVID-19 pandemic, there has not been much more action on the issue. He said the current condition of the building is unsalvageable.

Let's Go Paperless | This is from Ward 6 Councilor John Krol's eblast today. His switch to digital immediately caught our attention. With the associated costs - nearly $4,000 a year for paper alone! - zipping councilors "the packet" (as we in the know like to call it) over the ether makes loads of sense.
Digital also means the average citizen gets far better access to these public documents than ever before. The city clerk's office has been diligent about posting meeting agendas and, where possible, relevant documents. So in terms of saving money and time and getting information out efficiently, digital is the way to go.
I would like to thank City Clerk Linda Tyer for agreeing to print out one less city council packet, as I have officially gone paperless for council meetings - which I hope will be a trend that can be extended throughout city government.
 The bulky (and often, very bulky) city council packet that councilors use for a reference costs an average of $170 per meeting for paper alone. Add the additional costs of ink/toner, wear and tear on city hall copiers, and the time and energy of staff who put it all together - and a simple transition away from paper benefits everyone.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Dozens of youths, many of them under the age of 5, attended an open house at the Berkshire Music School Saturday, as the educational nonprofit enters its 70th year at its 30 Wendell Avenue home.
The open house featured a sample class, access to musical instruments, information for parents, refreshments... and more than a few delighted squeals, proving once again the inherent interest in making a joyful noise is not generational, and will never go out of style.
