Peter Haviland during his time in Vietnam. BREWSTER, Mass. — Peter Haviland served his country in the Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 as a specialist fourth class. Born in Cambridge, he went to college for a while after graduating high school, then decided to volunteer for the draft. "College wasn't working out so I decided to enlist," he remembered. He went to Fort Dix, N.J., for basic training then was sent to Fort Polk, La., for Infantry Training. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With donations continuing to come in to support their newly established endowment for the Jeffrey Whitehouse / Paul Harris Scholarships, the Pittsfield Rotary Club announces that proceeds of their April 1, 2023 Auction at Berkshire Hills Country Club totaled over $100,000. Over 200 supporters turned out to bid on the over $60,000 worth of goods and services donated to the auction. Those supporters bid in excess of $53,000, funds that will support the Rotary Club's good work in the community throughout the next year. BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced it has received $4 million total from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grant Program. The money will support the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Aeronautics and Rail and Transit Division's clean energy grid and climate-related initiatives. He recently defended his dissertation and is expected to be presented with his doctor of philosophy degree this May. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city now has a potential candidate for Ward 2 and two with certified signatures.
Election papers became available on April 3 and there is now at least one interested candidate in all seven Wards. Incumbent Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey's 50 signatures within the ward have been certified and City Clerk Michele Benjamin's 150 signatures to run for re-election have been certified.
Hot Dog Ranch owner Craig Benoit has taken out papers for a Ward 2 and an at-large seat.
