Nature Conservancy Welcomes Hikers to New Washington Trail

A kiosk offers information on the trail and conserved woodlands. 

WASHINGTON, Mass. — The Nature Conservancy created a trail along Coles Brook with the property's history in mind. 

On Friday, the nonprofit held the first guided walk through the Headwaters Trail Loop, located in the Coles Brook Preserve. The nearly 1,500-acre property that spans into Middlefield now has a 1.2-mile trail with an OPDMD (other power-driven mobility devices) route. 

The conservancy hasn't had a trail opening for more than 25 years, and now has about 10 statewide.  Coles Brook is one of the organization's largest state preserves and consists of shrubby wetlands,

Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s Lose, Stay Alive at New England Regional

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Smithfield, R.I., Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars Sunday handed Pittsfield a 7-4 loss in the pool play finale at the New England Regional Championship.   The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s (2-1) advance to Monday morning’s bracket play, where they will face Brattleboro, Vt., at 10 a.m. for a berth in the regional semi-final.   The Rhode Islanders Sunday scored four runs in the bottom of the third to erase a 2-1 deficit and takes  three-run lead they never relinquished.   Smithfield was up by four going to the top of the seventh, when Pittsfield loaded the bases with two out and got a walk from Matt Keegan to drive in a run.   One

Berkshire Force a Force To Be Reckoned With at CRA Tourney

DALTON, Mass. – The only force stronger than the Berkshire Force on Sunday was Mother Nature.   The Pittsfield-based travel softball program won two age-division titles and was on its way to a third before a mid-afternoon storm caused a premature end to the 14-and-under division final at Pine Grove Park.   The Berkshire Force 12U squad finished a 4-0 weekend at the three-day tournament by beating the Greylock Thunder, 10-5, in the finale.   The Force 10Us went 3-0 in their three-team division, knocking off the Adams-Cheshire-Savoy Swat, 16-1, in the championship game.   Berkshire’s 14U team scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-11, walkoff win

Pittsfield Releases First Cultural Plan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Arts are in the genetic makeup of Pittsfield, and now the city has a formal plan to support creatives and restore civic pride. 

The first Cultural Plan was released in late June. A collaboration between the city, Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, and its nonprofit Berkshires Tomorrow, it recommends actions to "enhance Pittsfield's status as the arts and cultural hub of Berkshire County for the benefit of all." 

This includes increasing the accessibility of arts and culture for all, supporting multi-modal ways of travel,

Sheffield American Legion Team Tops Post 68-2 in Tournament

MILFORD, Mass. – Robert Baer went 2-for-3 with four RBIs Sunday to lead the Sheffield Post 340 Seniors to a 13-3 win over Pittsfield Post 68-2 in the Massachusetts American Legion Tournament.   Christian Blanchard, Jack Bissaillon, Ben Kelly and Brady Carpenter each had a pair of hits in a 14-hit attack for Sheffield, which ended the game after five innings.   Bissaillon earned the win on the mound with a complete-game effort, striking out seven and walking three.   Post 68-2 used three different pitchers, who combined to allow eight earned runs.   Connor Kirchner led Pittsfield’s offense with an RBI triple. Pittsfield Street Work Scheduled July 21-25

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City Hall has released a list of street improvements that are scheduled to be undertaken from Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25.   The Department of Public Works will making the following improvements: Crosswalk line painting will occur overnight hours this week in the downtown area and near schools. Berkshire Force 14s Win Showdown with Thunder at Dalton Tournament

MILFORD, Mass. – Daniel Heisler struck out four and scattered six hits in a complete-game effort on the mound Saturday to lead the Milford Post 59 Seniors to a 5-1 win over Post 68-2 in the Massachusetts American Legion Baseball playoffs.   Gavin Maffuccio went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run on a Christian Aldrich RBI in the top of the first for Post 68-2.   Colby Robb took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in six innings of work.   Post 68-2 Sunday plays Sheffield Post 340, a 9-2 loser at East Springfield.

Berkshire Flyer Passenger Service Suspended

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — WNYT Channel 13 in Albany, N.Y., is reporting that passenger train service to the city was suspended including the Berkshire Flyer.   An Amtrak advisory in late June first stated Train 1237, the Berkshire Flyer, would terminate at Albany and a bus would complete the transit to Pittsfield.    WNYT reported this week that service would be suspended until January because a hole developing under the tracks in Greenbush, N.Y., was creating a massive safety hazard.   According to Railway Supply, shifting soil was first noticed in May and worsened. Contractors are already making preparations for reconstruction of the area.

Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s Roll Over Maine

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Kevin Smith went 2-for-2 with a pair of triples and a pair of RBIs Saturday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars to a 17-3 win over Maine at the New England Regional.   Aiden Arseneau and Bryce Hoff each had a pair of hits, and Jace Coco doubled in a 10-hit Pittsfield attack.   Jonathan Parsons and Matt Keegan split time on the mound in the five-inning win.   Parsons started and struck out four while allowing one earned run in two innings of work. Keegan did not allow an earned run and struck out four.   Pittsfield improved to 2-0 in pool play, which it finishes on Sunday evening against Smithfield, R.I.
