State Transportation Secretary Announces Senior Management Appointments

BOSTON — Massachusetts Transportation of Transportation (MassDOT) Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt announced the appointment of Hayes Morrison as Undersecretary of Transportation and Matthew Bamonte as MassDOT Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).     Morrison and Bamonte have each been serving for several years on the senior leadership team at MassDOT and assume their new positions immediately.   "MassDOT, as an organization, and I personally, am incredibly fortunate to have dedicated public servants like Hayes and Matt ready to step into these roles thanks to their years of experience in senior management," said Secretary Tibbits-Nutt. FEMA Awards Almost $3.5M to Mass for COVID Vaccination Costs

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending nearly $3.5 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse it for the cost of providing vaccinations to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $3,494,771 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the cost of contracting to operate a statewide network of mobile vaccination sites between June and December 2022.   The contractor operated at 285 locations around the state and provided 73,455 vaccinations to individuals who met certain eligibility criteria. Pittsfield Receives $20M For Bel Air Dam Removal

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city will use $20 million in state American Rescue Plan Act funds to remove the deteriorating Bel Air dam.

On Friday, members of the Healey-Driscoll administration celebrated the investment of $25 million in ARPA funding — most of it going to Pittsfield — to remove eight abandoned, hazardous dams in the commonwealth.

Tyer Gives Update on Migrant Families in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is hosting 37 migrant families as part of the state's Emergency Assistance shelter program, providing wraparound services and resources to meet their needs.

On Tuesday, Mayor Linda Tyer provided an update on the program to the City Council as requested by Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky and Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick.

"There are no costs incurred by the city of Pittsfield for this program. The accommodations are paid for by the state and all of the food is paid for by the state," Tyer clarified.

Pittsfield Native Killed In Air Force Crash

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The body of Staff Sgt. Jacob Galliher was recovered off the coast of Japan after the military aircraft he was on crashed Wednesday.   The Pittsfield Police Department released a statement noting that Galliher was a 2017 graduate of Taconic High School.    The statement included that Galliher leaves behind his wife and 2-year-old and 6-week-old sons.   The Associated Press reported that on Nov. 29, an Air Force Osprey based in Japan crashed during a training mission off the country's southern coast. Pittsfield Council Tackles 'Health Hazard' Properties

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday tackled petitions on two properties that Councilor at Large Councilor Karen Kalinowsky sees as a health hazard: an abandoned office building on Merrill Road and a "junkyard" of cars on Shaker Lane.

The building at 444 Merrill Road, owned by Peter Petricca of Dallas as Four Forty Four Merrill Road LLC, has been vacant for more than a decade and is in tax title. Aside from the broken windows and graffiti on the exterior, Kalinowsky said there are human feces and garbage inside and she wants the city to secure it.

Pittsfield OKs 3-Year Contract for Curtis

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee has approved a three-year contract from 2024 to 2027 with Superintendent Joseph Curtis that does not raise his $185,000 salary in the first year.

Curtis reportedly requested that he not receive higher compensation in this agreement. He was ill at the time of the meeting and not able to attend.

"I would just like to note that I believe Mr. Curtis deserves a higher salary even though he has made it very clear that he does not want a higher salary with this contract," committee member Sara Hathaway said.

"But I hope there will be a point in the near future that we can help to bring his compensation closer to the salary
