State Rep. Smitty Pignatelli convenes the housing and food security summit at Lenox Town Hall on Friday. LENOX, Mass. — Organizations and officials agree that collaboration is the key to addressing the housing crisis and food insecurity.
More than 100 stakeholders piled into Town Hall to share ideas during a summit hosted by state Rep. William "Smitty" Pignatelli. The event covered the renovation and maintenance of existing housing units, resources at food sites, tenant advocacy, and the development of new affordable units.
Pignatelli said housing and food insecurity are hot topics in the State House and recognized the individual needs of Berkshire

 FALMOUTH, Mass. — Robert Savino served his country in the Army from 1966 to 1968, as a corporal and specialist (E-4). Growing up in upper Manhattan in New York City, he attended and graduated from what was then All Hallows Institute, a private boy's prep school. He did his basic training at Fort Riley, Kan. "We did a lot of jungle training. It was one of the first times in my life that I experienced diversification — Blacks, whites, Hispanics — but, in the end, we were all green in the same pot," he recalled. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Following outrage from City Councilors about the condition of public ways, Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales has responded with planning for improved maintenance. The overgrown aesthetic is attributed to issues with contracted work, being short-staffed, and weather struggles.
"I acknowledge the concerns raised regarding the current state of our downtown streetscape, which has seen areas becoming overgrown, unsightly, full of weeds. George Hoose's Indian head paintings are thought to be modeled on in-law Samuel Caesar, who claimed to be of native descent and wore a headdress. DALTON, Mass. — A painting by George Hoose was donated to the Fitch-Hoose House museum last week. George Hoose died in 1977 at age 80. He was a prolific painter and was known for the "Indian Head" painting on Gulf Road that has long since been painted over and weathered away. The donated painting is believed similar to that lost artwork. "[The painting] is just one more wonderful piece that helps us be more connected with the Hoose family.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A commemorative plaque will officially designate the Clapp Park ballfield for former coach George "Buddy" Pellerin.
The name change was approved about seven years ago after Pellerin passed away at the age of 77. The plaque's set be unveiled at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. "Chairman [Cliff] Nilan has been involved with this effort to site a permanent plaque at the Buddy Pellerin Field which is of course the main baseball field and Clapp Park where Buddy Pellerin coached and played for many, many years," Park, Open Space and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath explained to the Parks Commission on Monday.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development Recreation Program announces a Fall Foliage Community Bike Ride on Saturday, Oct. 14 on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. Participants are asked to arrive by 9:45 a.m. at the Crane Avenue parking lot. The bike ride will start at 10 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own bicycles and helmets are required for all riders. The route will include 4 miles, on the paved trail, to Whitney's Farm Market for a stop. The group will then travel back 4 miles, ending at the Crane Avenue parking lot. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Monday, Sept. 25 marks the start of phase three for the fall flushing schedule of the City of Pittsfield's water system. Water mains throughout the city will be flushed through hydrants over the next several weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products. Mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, except holidays, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. This phase of flushing is expected to occur between Sept. 25 through Oct. 3.
