Alumni Music Fest at BCC Draws 250 Attendees

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The inaugural Alumni Music Fest at Berkshire Community College (BCC), held in late November drew more than 250 attendees and raised $3,000 for the Eleanore Velez Scholarship.    The scholarship supports students who are ineligible for federal aid due to their citizenship status. Such students include those who are undocumented, immigrants, refugees, or hold J-1 visas for exchange visitors.     Performing artists included the Samba Trio with Tarcisio "Taz" Ramos dos Santos and Laura Cabrera, Grammy-nominated musician Matt Cusson, Billy Keane, Andy Wrba, Chantell McCulloch, Dave Brown, Gina Coleman and others.    "We

Pittsfield names 'Cadwell Woods Conservation Area'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The so-called Saw Mill property has a new name that honors its origins as a family farm.

On Thursday, the Conservation Commission voted to rename the more than 50-acre parcel "Cadwell's Woods Conservation Area." The property dates back to the Cadwell family years before Pittsfield was founded and remained with them for 175 years.

In the early 1900s, it was referred to as the "Cadwell's Woods."

Last year, the city acquired the conservation land along the southwest branch of the Housatonic River to permanently protect it from development. It can be used for

Market 32 Announces Results of Disabled American Veterans Fundraising Campaign

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will be receiving more than $76,000 from a Price Chopper/Market 32 fundraising campaign to provide lifetime support to veterans and their families.    Price Chopper/Market 32 kicked off the fundraiser with a $10,000 donation and, combined with customer donations, raised $76,471 to go directly to DAV.   "As an organization, Disabled American Veterans goes above and beyond to provide veterans and their families lifetime support, free rides to medical appointments and connections to meaningful employment opportunities," said Mona Golub, Price Chopper/Market 32's vice president of public relations and

Pittsfield Awarded PARC Grant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city was awarded a $500,000 Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant to make improvements to Pontoosuc Lake Park.   The project will construct a shoreline promenade walkway with seating, picnic tables, an ADA pathway, and a kayak/ canoe launch will be built.    The Healey-Driscoll Administration  announced $13 million for park improvements and open space acquisitions across Massachusetts. Pittsfield Holds Bel Air Dam Removal Public Forum

PITTSFIELD, Mass.—Community members gathered at the Polish Falcon Club last week to hear the proposed plans for the Bel Air Dam Removal.    The two-century-old dam has been an area of concern for over a decade due to its deterioration and contamination.    AECOM Associate Vice President and Project Manager Jennifer Doyle-Breen said if the structure collapses it could mean trouble downstream, creating hazardous conditions.   "It is upstream of several businesses, residents and roads and failure of the dam could cause loss of life in substantial damages to infrastructure due to what is downstream of it. Teen Charged After Barracks Crash

CHESHIRE, Mass. — A Pittsfield teenager is facing multiple charges including driving under the influence after crashing her car into the State Police barracks.    According to State Police, the 17-year-old was traveling southbound on Route 8 at about 6:22 p.m. on Saturday when her 2000 Nissan Altima left the road and struck the east front corner of Cheshire barracks.    The girl and her passenger, another 17-year-old Pittsfield girl, were taken to Berkshire Medical Center for minor injuries.    The car crashed through the building's brick exterior wall and damaged a kitchen area.    After being treated at the hospital, the driver was
