By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
12:34PM / Sunday, November 12, 2023
PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  A man who came to argue with protesters on Thursday for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza left with a better understanding of their position.    "That guy came basically supporting Israel, and saying that Israelis have a right to defend themselves, and basically supporting the American policy position. By the end of that conversation. He was saying, war is not the answer," one of the organizers, Tamir Novotny, said.    Novotny told the man that a stop to the war starts with the United States government calling for a ceasefire.    "He was more aligned with us than he realized when he first came," Novotny

Fire Officials Issue Home Heating Reminder
04:08PM / Saturday, November 11, 2023
STOW, Mass. — A three-alarm fire in Revere started with a furnace, prompting a reminder from fire officials to pay special attention to home heating safety.    Heating equipment is the #1 source of carbon monoxide at home and the second-leading cause of residential fires in Massachusetts.   "As the nights and mornings get chillier, many of us are turning up the heat for the first time since the spring," said State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine. "Be sure you're heating your home safely. That means having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the dwelling, having your appliances professionally checked, and keeping heat sources clear of

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:50AM / Friday, November 10, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Regional Housing Authority is in the process of rebranding to better clarify its mission.

Clients know the organization as being an accessible, compassionate, and helpful place to access resources for housing and other human service needs but the word "authority" is sometimes confusing.

Burns Maxey of the firm Burnsmax was hired to direct the rebrand in September and Executive Director Brad Gordon hopes to present next month different recommendations that are not yet "ready for prime time."

The goals are to rebrand to reflect the vision, enhance the narrative, and promote services. With a new identity, they hope to

@theMarket: Bonds, Stocks Should Consolidate After Epic Run
By Bill Schmick,
04:31AM / Friday, November 10, 2023
This stock market rally lasted nine straight days. That was more than enough to trigger some profit-taking.   "Too far, too fast" is my interpretation of the nine-day continuous climb in the equity and bond markets. The rally that started early last week continued this week, although it was clear to me that it is showing some signs of faltering.   And as has happened throughout the year, the Magnificent Seven group of stocks was the focus of most of the buying but on less and less volume. Since they represent such a large part of the indexes, it was not hard to see that the indexes were supported by a handful of stocks. However, the remaining 493 stocks in the S&P

The Retired Investor: The Gap in Home Health-Care Workers
By Bill Schmick,
04:11PM / Thursday, November 09, 2023
Baby Boomers are aging. As their health fails, an increasing number of the elderly are turning away from nursing homes and opting for home health care instead. The problem is finding enough trained caregivers to handle demand.   The demographics in the U.S. indicate two trends — an aging population as well as a declining birth rate. By 2034, there will be more adults over the age of 65 than children under the age of 18. Between 2018 and 2060, the population of seniors will double.   An overwhelming majority of Americans (88 percent) would rather receive long-term care services in their homes as they age, according to a recent study by the Associated Press and NORC Center for
