 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Work and Family Mobility Act, which went into effect on July 1, provides hope and a sense of ease for immigrants across the commonwealth.
This week, community leaders were staged outside of the Registry of Motor Vehicles providing assistance and support after the act made it possible for residents to apply for a standard class D or M driver's license regardless of immigration status.
"I summarize it as hope for people that things can get better," activist Clemente Sajquiy said on Monday. "They are going to be finally able to drive freely without being afraid of being pulled over and their cars being taken from them."

 WESTFIELD, Mass. – Cam Hillard and Noah Arnold combined on a three-hitter Wednesday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars to a 13-2 win over Westfield in the opener of the Western Massachusetts State Tournament. Hillard struck out six and allowed a pair of hits and a pair of runs in three innings of work. Arnold picked up a strikeout in two innings on the mound in a game that was ended early due to the mercy rule.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Pitching depth was key for the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars in Wednesday’s Western Massachusetts tournament opener. Four different hurlers combined to hold Westfield to four hits in a 5-3 win at Deming Park. Jason Fields earned the win after allowing one run in 2 and a third innings of work on the hill.  DALTON, Mass. – Sully Duquette and Beau Sanders each had a hit and drove in a pair of runs Wednesday to lead the Dalton-Hinsdale 12-year-old Little League All-Stars to an 8-5 win over Great Barrington in the Don Gleason District 1 Tournament at Chamberlain Park. Cam Sievers earned the win on the mound for Dalton-Hinsdale in its opening game of the Williamsport tournament. Jacob Blackwell and Johnny Gappa each drove in a run for Great Barrington. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development has announced the return of the Parks Playground Program at three city parks this summer. The Summer Playground Program offers a variety of recreation activities to Pittsfield children ages 6 to 13 at no cost. Playground Leaders create safe, supervised and fun-filled environments with activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and nature activities. The program begins Monday, July 10 and runs through Friday, August 18. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Donald Monsees, 71 years of age, who was accused of child rape among other charges will continue ot be held in custody on $250,000 bail. On Friday, June 30 a bail hearing was held for Donald Monsees, 71 years of age, in Berkshire Superior Court following 180-day hold expired. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is seeing increased interest in this year's election and with just a few weeks until signatures are due, many candidates have been certified.
As of late last week, new faces have taken out papers for the mayoral and at-large, Ward 2 and Ward 6 council races.
There are now five parties interested in replacing Mayor Linda Tyer, who announced that she will not be seeking re-election earlier this year.
David Webber has taken out papers for mayor, joining John Krol, Craig Gaetani, Karen Kalinowsky, and Peter Marchetti on the list. Not much can be found on the new candidate from public records.

DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission has decided to participate in the upcoming Dalton Day event on Saturday, July 15. The commission will be selling Fitch-Hoose House tiles, bandanas, books and Dalton bicentennial plates, keychains, bracelets, fans and magnets. Due to staffing issues, the historic Fitch-Hoose House Museum, on 6 Gulf Road, will be closed that day although a sign will encourage potential museumgoers to attend Dalton Day. The commissioners hope the event will provide more exposure to the 177-year-old two-story house to encourage more visitors. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Friday approved three appropriations in the 11th hour of fiscal 2023 after they were derailed earlier in the week.
These were orders to transfer and appropriate $620,000 from free cash to the Department of Public Services for snow and ice removal, to transfer $75,000 from retained sewer earnings to the Department of Public Utilities Wastewater Division for sludge handling, and to transfer and appropriate $850,000 from free cash to the Police Department for scheduled overtime.
