Government Briefs: EV Funding, MassReconnect Results
05:01PM / Friday, July 12, 2024
The following is a roundup of state and federal announcements and programs this week.    • Members of the state's congressional delegation have announced $60 million in funding for commnities to transition to low- or zero-emission buses. This is expected to reduce transit systems' reliance on fossil fuels, and reduce diesel-related air pollution along major transit corridors for Black, brown, and low-income communities that disproportionately bear environmental health burdens from transportation emissions.    Some $40 million of the funding goes to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for battery-powered buses; the MBTA was awarded $116 million in

@theMarket: Inflation Data Boosts Markets
By Bill Schmick,
04:51PM / Friday, July 12, 2024
The Consumer Price Index was cooler than expected in June, while the Producer Price Index was warmer. Equity traders responded by selling winners and buying losers.   CPI inflation fell further than most expected as easing prices for gasoline and other staples like food and new lease rents cooled dramatically. That information might help the level of anxiety people are feeling about inflation. It appears that the price points of most staples have finally flattened out year-over-year instead of constantly going up as they have for the last few years.    Countering that good news, wholesale prices climbed 0.2 percent last month led by prices for services, which offset a decline

Additional Office Space Sought for Pittsfield Police
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:24AM / Friday, July 12, 2024
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is seeking more office space for the Pittsfield Police Department outside of its aged station.   A request for proposals for office building acquisition to house police personnel was made available on June 12 and bidding will open on July 16. It calls for 12,000 square feet of move-in ready space.   "The age of the structure" and the Police Department's evolution over the years led to the RFP, according to Catherine VanBramer, Mayor Peter Marchetti's director of administrative services and public information officer.   The current station has long been described as being inadequate, for having out-of-date facilities, not

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
09:40PM / Thursday, July 11, 2024
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Mike Ressler was unhittable on the mound, and the Pittsfield Little League All-Stars completed a convincing run through the Don Gleason District 1 Tournament with a 19-0 win over Dalton-Hinsdale on Thursday.   Pittsfield was every bit as good as expected in its first season since merging the city’s two Little League divisions.   But its coach was quick to point out that the tournament runners-up were far better than the final score indicated.   “Everything your coach said about you is spot on,” Pittsfield skipper Ty Perrault said during the postgame ceremony. “It was just a great effort. The positivity of the players and the

The Retired Investor: Tariffs Can Only Do So Much
By Bill Schmick,
05:40PM / Thursday, July 11, 2024
Tariffs in America have been used to accomplish specific goals throughout history. Until the Civil War, tariffs were a revenue generator for the government. After the Civil War, they were used to protect U.S. industries and during the Great Depression, tariffs evolved as a negotiating tool between nations, especially after World War II.   In the postwar years, tariffs built stronger trade relations between nations. Reciprocity rather than protectionism or revenue was the guiding principle behind our trade negotiations with other countries and economic regions. That idea still holds sway under certain circumstances, but tariffs have become an offensive policy tool as well.   I
