Berkshire Public Water Suppliers Awarded Grants10:59AM / Tuesday, July 30, 2024 | | BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced more than $17.4 million in grant awards to 21 public water suppliers to assist with long-term solutions that address and mitigate emerging contaminants in drinking water. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) selected 21 projects to help remove PFAS and manganese. Berkshire County Awardees: Housatonic Water Works Company – $350,000 The Housatonic Water Works Company in Great Barrington plans to construct a new treatment facility to remove manganese from the drinking water source at Long Pond. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is looking to add another leadership position to the public works department. The Personnel Review Board on Monday supported the creation of a deputy commissioner in the Department of Public Services and Utilities. The full-time position, if approved by the City Council, will have a Grade M-8 pay scale with a yearly salary ranging from $89,247 to $116,021. This position would assist Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Ordinance Review Committee was thanked for its "tremendous" amount of work to update the city code. "You don't realize that something is dated until you see someone rewrite the same thing in a different way so I appreciate you updating the language to be a bit more present," Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey said during a joint meeting of the committee and the subcommittee on Ordinances and Rules last week. Since September 2022, the committee has worked to rid the code of outdated language, typos, duplications, and conflicts — including the addition of gender-neutral language throughout.
