PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Housing affordability goes beyond the direct costs of a mortgage or rent.

On Wednesday, the Affordable Housing Trust looked into energy costs as a challenge of affordable housing with presentations from the Berkshire Community Action Council and the Berkshire Environmental Action Team.

"Generally speaking, up to this point we've mostly been talking about the financial considerations of development whether the cost to build or rent or to renovate or to buy and we've also maybe touched a little bit on the social costs of a lack of development," member Kamaar Taliaferro explained.

05:50AM / Friday, April 21, 2023
BOSTON — Eversource natural gas customers can expect lower costs for the upcoming off-peak season beginning May 1 due to a significant drop in global market prices and reduced individual use during the summer months.    The energy company has filed decreased gas supply rates with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) and if approved, an average residential customer would see an approximately 15-20 percent savings per month compared to last summer.   "Whenever we can pass cost savings on to our customers and provide financial relief it is welcome news, especially following historically high energy prices throughout the region this past winter,"

The Retired Investor: The Boom in Pickleball.
By Bill Schmick,
04:47PM / Thursday, April 20, 2023
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. for the third year in a row. It has taken the country by storm, thanks to its popularity among all ages. Industry experts expect to grow at an annual rate of 9 percent between 2023 and 2033.   The game was invented by three middle-aged fathers on vacation on Bainbridge Island in 1995 and named after the family dog, Pickles. Recently, my wife Barbara suggested we might find out what makes the game so popular. For those, like me, who have not played yet, the game is a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It is not difficult to learn and can be played almost anywhere. All you need is a paddle and a whiffle-like ball and

The partnership hopes to improve safe reporting of domestic and sexual abuse?   Compared with the pre-Covid era, EFC has seen a 262 percent increase in calls to its Berkshire County hotline   For a victim of sexual or domestic violence, trafficking, or other abuse, seeking help can be a high-risk act. For many, confiding in a medical professional may, at first, feel safer than calling a domestic abuse hotline.??   Health care centers where clinicians are trained in trauma-informed care can be safe and private access points for victims. By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:41AM / Thursday, April 20, 2023

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters will not be able to cast ballots early by mail but can they can still request an absentee ballot for the town election.

Last week, Clerk Ruth Knysh asked the Select Board to opt out of early voting by mail for municipal elections. Her request came after the state expanded access last year.

"An act passed to allow early voting by mail for local elections. It used to be just state and federal," she said. "So my thought on that is it's not in my budget, it's a lot of extra work added on me. I'm only one person in there."

Knysh explained that all of the mail-in ballots would have to be opened and processed by herself
