BCC Accepting Applications for Physical Therapist Assistant Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass —?Berkshire Community College (BCC) is now accepting applications for entrance into its Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. About 20 students will be accepted into the fall 2023 cohort.    Physical therapist assistants work in diverse settings that include hospitals, private PT practices, community health agencies, schools, pediatric facilities,nursing homes, industrial or corporate health facilities and rehabilitation centers. PTAs are in high demand, and that demand is expected to increase in response to the healthcare needs of an older population and individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Central Berkshire Discussing Preschool at Wahconah Regional

DALTON, Mass. — The Central Berkshire Regional School District School Committee started a discussion on adding a preschool to Wahconah Regional High School during its meeting last week.    This addition would address feedback that the district has received from community members regarding the accessibility of its other preschool programs and provide more internship opportunities to Wahconah students.    The district's preschool program is very healthy and there are times when families are turned away and added to the waitlist because there isn’t enough room in the program, Superintendent Leslie Blake-Davis said. BFAIR & Greylock Federal Distribute 250 Bicycle Helmets

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Saturday's word of the day was "safety" at the Ashuwilliticook Rail Trail as two organizations partnered to distribute hundreds of free helmets in honor of National Brain Injury Awareness Month. 

Stationed at the trailhead on connector road, representatives of Berkshire Family and Individual Resources and Greylock Federal Credit Union handed out 150 helmets for ages 6-13 and 100 helmets for those 14 and older.

Pittsfield Fire Knock Down Brown St. Blaze

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment on Brown Street just after 2 a.m. Tuesday.   Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing from the side of the building. Car 2 requested a second alarm calling engine 1 engine 6 and the Hinsdale Rehab unit.   Engine 2 attacked the main body of the fire while other units deployed handlines for the interior.   Heavy fire was encountered n the first, second floor, and attic.   Crews were able to get the main body of the fire under control in 40 minutes.   There was extensive fire, water, and smoke damage on the three floors. Pittsfield Council OKs Bilingual Pay Increase, Diversity Ambassador Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An increase in bilingual proficiency compensation and a diversity, equity, and inclusion ambassador program was approved during last week's City Council meeting — but not without debate.

The council voted to amend the bilingual proficiency ordinance by $50, as city employees have seen a great need for translation services while communicating with residents.

The proposed increase would compensate an extra $175 a month for oral or reading/written fluency and $225 a month for oral and written fluency. Originally approved in 2020, the ordinance offered an extra $125 a month for either oral or reading/written fluency, or $175 for both oral and written

Dryer Fire Causes Damage to Pittsfield Home

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters determined a dryer caused a fire in a Preston Ave. home Sunday.   There were no injuries, and there was smoke and fire damage on the home's first floor. The fire was deemed to be accidental.   Firefighters responded to a reported fire in the basement of a Preston Ave. home. Upon arrival, the Engine 6 crew found heavy smoke coming from the basement and first floor of the home.   They found heavy fire in the basement near the washer and dryer that had spread across the ceilings and walls.   Firefighters worked for about 40 minutes to get the fire under control.      The occupants were assisted by members of the Red

BCC Calls for Submissions For Daniel Dillon '62 Heart of Service Alumni Award

PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College (BCC) is now accepting submissions for its annual Daniel Dillon '62 Heart of Service Alumni Award, created in 2021 in remembrance of Daniel Dillon.   A 1962 BCC graduate, Dillon was known for caring deeply about his community. He succumbed to COVID-19 in January 2021.     BCC and the BCC Alumni Association Board, together with Dillon's family, created the award to honor a BCC alumnus, former student or current student who has shown dedication to and made an impact on the community through service to others. Pittsfield School Committee Continues Budget Conversation Ahead of April 26 Vote

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With only a draft spending plan and a short turnaround from the budget workshop, the School Committee has continued informal budget conversation to guide the administration on its final ask.

Members participated in a budget workshops last week, digging into various line items for more than two hours. The committee is expected to adopt a budget on April 26 and have a joint meeting with the City Council no later than June 1.

BREWSTER, Mass. — Peter Haviland served his country in the Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 as a specialist fourth class.    Born in Cambridge, he went to college for a while after graduating high school, then decided to volunteer for the draft.   "College wasn't working out so I decided to enlist," he remembered.    He went to Fort Dix, N.J., for basic training then was sent to Fort Polk, La., for Infantry Training.   "They did their best to replicate what we would — lots of night training exercises — it was challenging" he recalled.   He would arrive in Vietnam in
