PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College will offer a new certification for environmentalists interested in water quality.
Last week, the Board of Trustees approved a request for a new 11-credit Water Quality Monitoring certificate program. Bruce Winn, associate professor of environmental and life sciences, said the Berkshire Environmental Action Team, the Housatonic Valley Association, and the Hoosac River Watershed Association came to the college asking for training in monitoring and assessing surface water and outfalls in the county. This is what started the idea for a formal certificate program.

That skill won him a spot in the finals of Legoland New York's first Junior Master Model Builder Competition this past weekend. "I'm excited because I'm actually one of the top five people at Lego building. I'm not just one plain Lego builder," the 11-year-old said.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Berkshire County (RSVP) will mark 50 years of service throughout the county with the event, “50 Years and Counting,” on Wednesday, April 12, in the auditorium at the Berkshire Athenaeum, 1 Wendell Ave. The event, which will be held from 1-3 p.m., is free and open to the public. It will feature close to 30 volunteer stations representing organizations who are partners with RSVP throughout the county. Man Pleads Guilty To St. Joseph's Church Door Burning Staff Reports ,

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, April 3, Michael Innis pleaded guilty to Burn Building and Destruction of Place of Worship in Berkshire Superior Court. Judge Flannery sentenced Innis to 2.5-3.5 years in state prison. The Commonwealth recommended 3 to 4 years in state prison. The defense recommended 2.5 years in the House of Corrections. On August 4, 2021, Michael Innis, who was 53 at the time, and a second defendant were discovered to have set fire to the south facing door of St. Joseph's Church. Damage caused by the fire was estimated to be over $10,000. The second defendant's case is pending. Pittsfield Police investigated the crime. 0 Comments

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A special Parks Commission meeting will be held Wednesday to vote on recommended designer services for the redo of Wahconah Park. The commissioners will meet virtually at 6 p.m. to decide whether to recommend to contract with S3 Design Inc. of Braintree for the restoration or rebuild of Pittsfield's historic baseball park. The city's purchasing agent will ask for a scope and price proposal if the vote is positive.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nomination papers are available beginning Monday in the city clerk's office. Offices on this year's municipal ballot in November are a four-year term for mayor and two-year terms each for one city clerk post, four councilor at large seats, seven ward council seats (one for each ward) and six School Committee seats.  DALTON, Mass.—The Select Board last week voted in favor of installing "No Parking" signs on Daly Ave near Zinky's Pub. No parking signs will be installed on the east side of Daly from approximately 40 Daly Ave. to 48 Daly Ave. Board members agreed with residents that the "sightline on the corner is pretty dangerous." Neighbors said the parking on Daly has not only caused traffic congestion but has become a safety issue. PITTSFIELD, Mass. The City of Pittsfield Public Utilities discovered a discharge of untreated wastewater on Wahconah Street near the Northern intersection with North Street. The discharge began at approximately 7:30 a.m. on April 3, and it stopped at 8:30 a.m. It was determined that this discharge was caused by A sewer main blockage at the Northern intersection of Wahconah Street and North Street. The estimated discharge volume at the time of this notification is unknown, and the possible waterbodies affected include the West Branch Housatonic River.
