Pittsfield Trash and Recycling Schedule

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In the wake of overnight snowfall, strong wind gusts, and additional downed wires and trees, travel conditions remain difficult, resulting in continued cancellations and closures.   This includes trash and recycling pickup that is canceled today, Wednesday, March 15. The trash and recycling schedule in the city of Pittsfield will be as follows for the remainder of the week: Tuesday and Wednesday routes: rescheduled for collection on Thursday. Locations not serviced from previous days and Thursday route: will be collected on Friday. Friday route: will be collected on Saturday.

Governor Announces End of COVID-19 Public Health Emergency

BOSTON — Today, March 15, the Healey-Driscoll Administration announced that the state's COVID-19 public health emergency will end on May 11, 2023, to align with the end of the federal public health emergency.    The announcement this week, ahead of the 45-day notice required by state law, allows additional time for impacted organizations to prepare for the end of the public health emergency.    Governor Healey will also file legislation that would extend key flexibilities provided by the public health emergency, particularly around staffing for the health care industry and emergency medical services (EMS). BCC Taking Applications for Nursing Programs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC), which offers a range of nursing classes, is now taking applications for the fall 2023 semester.    BCC offers financial aid and college credits for all courses, allowing students to easily continue their education at BCC or transfer to four-year schools.    Practical Nurse (PN): BCC offers a 10-month certificate program as a lead-in to licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Prerequisites include Biology 150, English 101 and Psychology 107, and applicants must score a 258 or higher on an Accuplacer math exam. Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum Can't Find Parking

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Some Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum volunteers have been having trouble finding parking in the upper lot upon arriving in the morning, one board member said during the Library Trustees meeting last week.    After much frustration one volunteer did a “robust investigation, into what the cultpet and determined that the parking issues occur after district court starting time.    The volunteer suspects that the spaces are being taken up by people who have court appearances at 9.     She arrived at this conclusion because the upper parking lot is full when the library has yet to be open but when the volunteer returns at 10

State Senator Paul Mark Appearances

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — State Senator Paul Mark will join the 350ma-Berkshires' monthly meeting on Weds., March 15, at 6:15 p.m. to discuss the issue of hydrogen and three important bills before the legislature.    The public is invited.   Also, all are invited to join the nationwide divestment demonstration on Tuesday, March 21, from  4:30 to 6 pm at Pittsfield's Park Square sponsored by the 350ma-Berkshires node and Third Act.    According to a press release, the goal is to encourage people to leave the Big Four Banks that invest in fossil fuel infrastructure and open accounts with local, community banks.

Pittsfield Con Com Greenlights Rail Trail Extension

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Conservation Commission has green-lit the latest Ashuwillticook Rail Trail extension.

Last week, the panel issued 34 orders of conditions for the project, which includes a 10-foot paved multi-use path that runs from Crane Avenue to Merrill Road. The commission added a requirement for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) soil testing after Jonathan Lothrop expressed concern about the pollutants.

Following conversation at the last meeting, he said it seemed like the project was geared up for possible contaminants from railroad ties and is concerned about PCB contamination, as there is a remediated site to the west.

National Grid Responding to Impacts of Powerful Nor'easter

WALTHAM, Mass. — National Grid has over 3,000 field personnel responding to power outages caused by downed limbs, trees, and poles resulting from the heavy snow and strong wind gusts of the Nor'easter impacting Massachusetts today.     The storm, expected to persist until Wednesday morning, is bringing heavy, wet snow in parts of the state and whipping winds with gusts as strong as 65 mph along the coast, causing damage and power outages in some locations. BOSTON — Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca L. Tepper announced the appointment of Bonnie Heiple as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).    Heiple starts on March 20.   "Massachusetts residents should know that they have a leader at MassDEP who will protect their communities," said Governor Healey. Pittsfield Community Development Has Light Agenda for First 2023 Meeting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — At its first meeting of the year, the Community Development Board last week determined that subdivision approval is not required for an East Street car dealership and welcomed the city's new planner.

The Johnson family, which owns Johnson Ford at 694 East St. and 720 East St., want to divide the property to have its buildings on separate lots.

STOW — Massachusetts fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms when they change their clocks.   "Working smoke and CO alarms are crucial home safety tools," said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. Pittsfield School Officials Adopt Safe Gun Storage Resolution

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The School Committee has unanimously voted to adopt a safe firearm storage resolution as an effort to shield its students and staff from gun violence.

The resolution warrants communications to parents, guardians, and students on the importance of secure firearm storage as soon as possible, distributed to each school at least once annually, and included in the district website and student registration materials.

Additionally, it directs the superintendent to update the student handbooks with this information to continue work with local law enforcement, health agencies, and nonprofit organizations on the effort.
