Pittsfield Man Found Guilty After Stabbing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Friday, March 10 in Berkshire Superior Court Joshua Lofink was found guilty on all counts: 2 counts of Mayhem; 2 counts of Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon causing Serious Bodily Injury with a knife; and 2 counts of Vandalism, slashing tires on a car.    Lofink, a resident of Pittsfield in his late 30s, has a criminal history in Massachusetts, Connecticut and California. Sentencing will take place on Tuesday, March 14. Honorable Judge Agostini presided.   On Sept. 16, 2021, at 10:30pm police were dispatched to the area of Tyler Street and Curtis Terrace for the report of a stabbing.    When the officers arrived, they

Governor Announces Creation of Director of Rural Affairs

Pittsfield Council to Tackle North Street Petitions on Tuesday

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City councilors may put the North Street ballot question to rest this Tuesday.

After weeks of confusion, the council at its last meeting voted against sending the question to City Clerk Michele Benjamin and Councilor at Large Pete White motioned to table with the intent to rescind in two weeks.  

On Thursday, White confirmed that he still intends to motion to rescind this week.

Early this year, Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky put forward a petition to allow voters to decide if North Street should be two lanes with bike lanes or a four-lane way without. She has spoken against the bike lanes since being elected.

Former EOE Systems Supervisor Violates Conflict of Interest Law

BOSTON — Radhika Uppaluri, a former programmer and systems supervisor for the state Executive Office of Education (EOE), has paid a $70,000 civil penalty for violating the conflict of interest law by, as an EOE employee, hiring and supervising information technology (IT) consultants recruited by her family's company.    Uppaluri signed a Disposition Agreement in which she admitted to the violations and waived her right to a hearing.   While at EOE, Uppaluri also held positions in her family's company, Shri Radhe Krishna Corporation (SRK). Big Y donates almost $44,000 to Local Breast Cancer Groups

Pittsfield Fire Department Pins Captains, Lieutenants

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A tradition was revived from pre-pandemic times on Thursday as members of the Fire Department were recognized for moving up the ladder.

Three captains and five lieutenants were pinned by friends and loved ones during a ceremony at Taconic High School. A new badge was placed on the men's class A Uniforms.

"It’s important to know that all of you have earned these promotions," Chief Thomas Sammons said. "You put the time in and made it happen. You should be proud."

FEMA Awards Nearly $1.4 Million to Mass for COVID-19 Supplies

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending almost $1.4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse it for the cost of purchasing emergency supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $1,377,794 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE) and supplies purchased to address COVID-19.   The PPE and supplies purchased between June 2020 and June 2021 included gloves, masks, gowns, face shields, storage carts and containers, respirator supplies, syringes, bandages, breathing tubes, thermometers and sanitizing supplies.   "FEMA is pleased to be

Pittsfield Celebrates 25 Years of Twinning With Irish Sister City

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield has "twinned" with Ballina, Ireland, for 25 years now, a partnership that has been filled with learning, community, and the occasional exchange of whiskey.

On Friday, officials from the two sister cities gathered at City Hall to mark the quarter-century milestone. Mayo County Councillor Michael Loftus, Mayo County Council Director of Services Tom Gilligan, and Chairman of the Twinning Committee Willie Nolan represented Ballina in this year's visit.

Stocks fell this week as investors turned more bearish. You can blame Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for that as well as troubles in the banking sector.   "Higher for Longer" may be finally sinking in. Powell's two-day testimony in front of the House and the Senate this week was decidedly hawkish.
