BHS July 4th 5K Road Race Still Going After 40 Years

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — It has been forty years since the first running of the Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) July 4th 5K kicked off in front of the parade spectators on Wahconah Street in Pittsfield.    The upcoming event sponsored by BHS and under the direction of Berkshire Running Foundation's Shiobbean Lemme for the third year.   In 1985 just under 200 runners took part in the race which last year registered just over 1100, bringing the attendance back to more than pre pandemic numbers.      Changes have been made to the event, including the support of BHS to register all students' grades K-12 for free, which Berkshire Running Foundation offers

Pittsfield School Committee OKs Middle Grade Restructuring

Vice Chair Daniel Elias said restructuring is 'never popular' but necessary in this case. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee has decided that now is the time to move forward with restructuring the city's middle schools. 

They made a historic vote on Wednesday night to create an upper elementary school for Grades 5-6 and a junior high school for Grades 7-8 by the 2026-2027 academic year. A stipulation was added that if goals in the Middle School Restructuring Committee's timeline are not met by the December meeting, it will be delayed one year.

Post 68-1 Comes Back to Beat Northampton

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Roshan Warriar gave up one run in five innings of work on the mound Wednesday as the Pittsfield Post 68 American Legion Seniors-1 team came from behind to beat Northampton Post 28, 11-7.   Northampton jumped out to a 6-1 lead midway through the second inning, but Post 68 rallied for six in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.   Warriar struck out three and walked two while allowing two hits after taking the mound.   Ben Jacob led Pittsfield’s offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.   Cam Zerbato, Jason Codey and Simon Mele each had two hits, including a double apiece. Codey went 2-for-3 with four RBIs.   Post 68-1 (4-0)

Hudpucker's OKed For Outdoor Dining

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With approval from the city, Hudpucker's Pub and Grill will have outdoor dining this summer. 

Last week, the Parks Commission voted to allow the Wahconah Street restaurant to use some "dead" park land at the corner of its property for fenced patio seating. It was approved for one year and will be approved on an annual basis.  

"Our goal is to enhance the neighborhood with a clean, attractive, and safe outdoor space that brings more activity and energy to the street during the summer and fall," owner Mark Martin told the commissioners at Tuesday's meeting.

Pittsfield Collision Detours Traffic on Merrill Road

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Merrill Road and Plastics Avenue partially shut down the roadway for nearly an hour.    There was a collision at about 2:30 p.m. involving a black Honda sedan and a white GMC extended-cab pickup truck, and possibly another pickup. The sedan suffered extensive front-end damage and the GMC suffered significant damage to the rear driver's side. The third pickup also appeared to have some damage on the rear driver's side.    At least two vehicles were towed from the scene.   Traffic was detoured around the scene and down Plastics Avenue. Lanesborough Select Board Sees New Member, Chair

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Select Board welcomed a new member on Monday and elected Deborah Maynard as chair.  

Last week, just under 4 percent of the town's registered voters turned out for the election of a Select Board member, two Finance Committee seats, and more. Jason Breault secured a three-year seat on the board, replacing Timothy Sorrell, who did not stand for election. 

"It's great to have Jason on board. I'm really happy," Maynard said. 

On June 17, 98 of the town's 2,573 registered voters turned out to Town Hall for the election. Breault had 66 votes, and there were 27 write-ins.

BHS Pledges Support for The First, a New Resource Center in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The First, a new daytime resource and community center opening in downtown Pittsfield this fall, has received a major commitment from Berkshire Health Systems (BHS).    BHS has pledged $300,000 over two years to support the project's start-up costs, with a portion of the pledge being designated as matching funds to encourage giving from other local individuals and organizations.   In a show of community support, a private donor has added $60,000 to the matching pool. This means all donations from individuals and businesses up to $100,000 will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling their impact.   The First is a new daytime resource center

Dalton to Decide Police Budget, Fund Transfers

DALTON, Mass. — After a contentious two-day town meeting, lengthy discussions between community members and town officials, and the postponement of the initial special town meeting date, voters will reconvene on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Regional High School.   Voters will be deciding on six warrant articles during the town meeting, including the police budget that was singled out from the rest of the operating budget during the town meeting with an eye to making more cuts.   During the annual town meeting, the Police Department proposed a budget of $1,664,924, an increase of $129,668 over the previous fiscal year. Pittsfield School Committee to Vote on Middle School Restructuring

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee will take a historic vote on the structure of Pittsfield Public Schools on Wednesday. 

On the agenda is a "vote on the middle school grade plan" restructuring, which would create an upper elementary school for grades 5-6 and a junior high school for Grades 7-8 by the 2026-2027 academic year. This would modify current school attendance zones away from assigning students to a middle school based on their home address.

BCC and PHS Awarded Early College Designation

Pittsfield Creates Separate Authority for Dangerous Dogs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Animal Control Commission will no longer have to make tough decisions on dangerous dogs, as a hearing authority will now handle that. 

This is a part of several changes made to the commission over the past couple of months, including fewer members and no requirement for veterinarian representation on the panel. 

"So this commission is supposed to meet four times a year to discuss happy things," Chair Renee Dodds told members in early June.
