PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Election papers became available on Monday and by the end of the week all council seats besides Ward 2 are seeing action.

Earlier this week, City Council President Peter Marchetti and former City Council Vice President John Krol launched their official campaigns for mayor.

Marchetti touts his long experience on the council, a 35-year career at the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, and his presence in the community as culminating factors to being a successful city leader. Krol points to his experience in broadcast and print media, working for former Mayor James Ruberto, and time on the council as tools to make Pittsfield the best that it can be.

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
04:53PM / Friday, April 07, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Christian Center spread Easter joy to 100 children with goodie baskets in advance of the holiday.

The center was decked out in pastel on Friday for its annual Easter festivities. Financial Director Pat Masoero brought out her bunny costume, which was accessorized with an egg necklace, plaid suspenders, and a matching bow tie.

While the basket handout ran from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., people were lined up at the center’s door at 8:30.

"It really was a fun two hours," Masoero said.

About 55 were handed out in the morning and, at noon, the center hosted a lunch of mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, glazed carrots, ham or fish, rolls, and cakes.

@theMarket: Is the Economy Rolling Over?
By Bill Schmick,
04:21PM / Friday, April 07, 2023
The long-awaited downturn in the U.S. economy may be nigh. A litany of weakening macroeconomic data this week is pointing to a slowdown in growth over the next few quarters.   Many in the financial markets, including me, have been anticipating this decline. I have predicted a moderate recession beginning sometime this year for many months now.  I am not alone. Many expect a much harder landing.   That will depend on the Fed. If the U.S. central bank continues to raise interest rates and is willing to forge ahead with further quantitative tightening, then Gross Domestic Product will fall further. The decline will only stop when the Fed stops.    This week, the

05:07AM / Friday, April 07, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two years ago the city adopted a Downtown Creative District for the North Street corridor. Now, planners would like to define what that means aesthetically.

On Tuesday, the Community Development Board got a first look at the proposed design guidelines and a parking table for the district. The board aims to provide clarity in the design process for developments or renovations within bounds.

"I thought the document was really thorough and ultimately is going to achieve that objective that we set out to achieve," board member Gary Levante said.

"Which is provide more transparency and more clarity to developers and others that are looking to

The Retired Investor: Money Talks
By Bill Schmick,
06:05PM / Thursday, April 06, 2023
Times are changing and, with them, many of the values Americans have held close and dear for generations. Money has become increasingly important, while traditional concepts such as patriotism, children, and religion are taking a backseat.    A new poll I read over this weekend set me back on my heels. When asked about their values, 43 percent of Americans polled say money as a value is very important to them; more important in fact than traditional values such as having children, community involvement, religion, or patriotism.   The survey, conducted by a non-partisan research organization at the University of Chicago called NORC, and the conservative, Fox-owned, Wall Street
