Berkshire Farmers Markets Receive Grants

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Berkshire Agricultural Ventures (BAV) has awarded $100,000 in grants to nine Berkshire area farmers markets to support SNAP matching programs.    In Berkshire County North Adams Farmers Market, Pittsfield Farmers Market, West Stockbridge Farmers Market, Lee Farmers Market, Great Barrington Farmers Market and Sheffield Farmers Market received grants.   "When we started farming, it was important for us to be able to produce great food for more than just a narrow segment of our community," said Michael Gallagher of Square Roots Farm (Lanesborough). WTBR Programs Win National Awards

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two local programs produced on Pittsfield Community Radio, 89.7 WTBR-FM won Hometown Media Awards in a national contest conducted by the Alliance for Community Media.   "On Patrol with the PPD," produced by the Pittsfield Police Department, and "Wheeling the Pathways of Life," produced by Brian Fitzpatrick, were chosen out of nearly one thousand submissions as best in their categories.   The Hometown Media Awards is the Foundation of the ACM's yearly awards program. BCArc Names Next President And CEO

Pittsfield Health Board Rescinds Verizon Cease & Desist Order

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of Health has voted to rescind its cease and desist order on the Verizon cell tower at 877 South St. after the telecommunications company filed a case against the city of Pittsfield in federal court.

Chair Bobbie Orsi said litigation is not the solution right now. Instead, the panel will pursue collaborative discussions to address the issue.

"When we issued the cease and desist order, we did that as a strategy to have a conversation with Verizon, I felt like that in our heart, in my heart, we really wanted them to come talk to us about this," she said at Wednesday's meeting.

Berkshire County Historical Society Presents 'Moby-Dick' Monologues

Man Sentenced To 30 Years in Prison for Carnevale Shooting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Judge Maureen Hogan sentenced Luis Delvalle-Rodriguez to serve 25 to 30 years in state prison and five years of probation afterward for shooting Nicholas Carnevale on Aug. 21, 2018 at a party at the Ashley Reservoir on October Mountain.   After a three-week jury trial, a Berkshire Superior Court Jury found the 27-year-old Delvalle-Rodriguez guilty last week of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed kidnapping with serious bodily injury, two counts of armed kidnapping, two counts of assault and battery, and malicious damage to a motor

Taconic High School Track Will Be Temporarily Closed

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Beginning Thursday, June 2, the track at Taconic High School will be closed to community use due to repairs to the rubberized track surface.    Work will continue through Sunday, June 5.   While the track is not open to public use, arrangements have been made to accommodate specific student activities on portions of the track.   Following this work, line marking is slated to occur within two weeks.

Pittsfield City Council Gives Preliminary OK to 9 Department Budgets

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On the second day of the fiscal 2023 budget hearings  last week, the City Council preliminary passed nine departmental budgets in an hour with just one suggested amendment.

The councilors recommended that $1,000 be added to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program's $106,000 budget for volunteer recognition night, a motion that was made by Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick.

The proposed municipal operating budget is $99,900,752 and the proposed public school budget is $72,398,262, totaling a municipal operating budget of $172,299,014.

Pittsfield Firefighters Extinguish Epworth Arms Apartment Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— Firefighters put out an apartment fire at Epsworth Arms Apartments on Tuesday morning that was caused by "careless cigarette smoking."    Fire trucks responded around 6:52 a.m. when dispatch was told by a passerby that smoke could be seen coming from the first-floor window of the three-story 35-unit structure at 350 West St.    Fire alarms were activated, and upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke spreading throughout the first-floor hallway.   Firefighters stretched a handline into the apartment and searched the building.   There were no injuries, and the majority of residents were ordered to remain in their
