PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, May 6, Yebin Mai, 32 of Staten Island, NY and Dem Wu, age 52 of Staten Island, NY, were found guilty by jury of their peers in Berkshire Superior Court. Yebin Mai was found guilty of two charges: Marijuana Trafficking in 100 pounds or more but less than 2,000 pounds and Witness Intimidation. Dem Wu was found guilty of Marijuana Trafficking in 100 pounds or more but less than 2,000 pounds. According to a report, on July 30, 2020, State Police responded to a request for assistance from the Eversource Electric Company. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Homeless Advisory Committee is sponsoring their third Housing Resource Fair. The fair will take place at Zion Lutheran Church at 74 First Street, on Thursday, May 9 between 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The fair will offer a variety of resources and assistance to those in the community who are seeking help with accessing stable and secure housing. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from local housing organizations and agencies, learn about affordable housing options, and receive information on resources for rental assistance.  DALTON, Mass. — Voters approved all but one of the 22 articles on the warrant at the annual town meeting on Monday night at Wahconah Regional High School. More than one hundred registered voters attended the meeting, which lasted more than three hours, to vote on the budget, school district regional agreement, a proposed bylaw change, and various spending items for town equipment, repairs, projects, and initiatives. The town budget of $22,951,092 is an increase of $1,449,376, or approximately 6.74 percent, over this year.  LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — After being closed for more than two years, Gulf Road reopened on Wednesday for the season. For the last week, the town Highway Department has been clearing up fallen trees and graded the stretch of road on both its side and Dalton's side on Wednesday, Lanesborough Department of Public Works Director Charlie Durfee said. The seasonal dirt road closed because of flooding caused by what was initially thought to be from a beaver dam that was located on the Pittsfield stretch. At the turn of the century, I returned to Berkshire County, where I had grown up. I had been gone a score of years, starting just after high school. It is hard to impress how halcyon Pittsfield was in the '60s-'80s. Crime was virtually unheard of. I remember a big "news story" in The Berkshire Eagle about teenagers drinking beer in the woods by fires. During the '90s, when Pittsfield was in the very beginning of its economic downturn brought on by GE downsizing, there was little crime in Pittsfield. Historians generally agree that the 1990s represented a national high-water mark from crime, but the Berkshires by and large ducked it.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Traffic Commission OK'd additional bus stops and multiple items in the former General Electric neighborhood at its first meeting of the year. The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority came to the panel last week with a second round of requests for bus stop signs as a part of larger operational changes. A couple of stops will be on Center Street and there will be regular stops on Tyler and Seymour Streets.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield Conservation Commission has announced that they and Lyon Aviation will sponsor a free Fishing Derby for youth 14 and under Saturday, May 11 at the Wild Acres Conservation Area (rain or shine). Volunteer support will be provided by the Onota Fishing Club to assist with dressing fish, providing fishing tips and techniques, baiting, etc. The derby will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 12:00 p.m. to those who catch the largest fish (length & weight). Berkshire Harm Reduction will move from its current 510 North St. location to a larger space at 42 Summer St., second floor, effective Monday, May 13. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mayor Peter Marchetti has proposed a $216 million budget for fiscal year 2025, a 5 percent increase from the previous year.
Budget season will kick off on Monday with a special meeting of the City Council containing several financial items, one being an order to raise and appropriate $216,155,210 for the city's operating budget. This begins the council's process of departmental spending deliberations with a budget adoption before the new fiscal year begins on July 1.
This is about a $10 million hike from FY24's $205,584,497 budget.
