Pittsfield Parks Commission OKs Summer Events

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With warm weather on the horizon, the Parks Commission OKed summer events during its regular meeting on Tuesday.   An arts festival and an earth expo were approved for The Common.   On July 6, the Mill Town Foundation will host the first Common Ground Arts Festival.  The free event will include live music, dance performances, and family-friendly activities.     "It's basically an extension of, or kind of a 2.0 version of Tanglewood in The City where we're getting more nonprofits from the area involved for live music, dance performances, yoga, some wellness stuff but a similar feel to Tanglewood in The City that will have

Barrington Stage To Hold Auditions for Local Teens

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Barrington Stage Company will hold auditions for local teens ages 13-19 for The Virginia and Harvey Kimmel Arts Education Fund's 2024 Devised Theatre Ensemble.   Auditions are March 23 at Barrington Stage's Wolfson Center, 122 North Street, from 10am-2pm. The day will start with a group warmup and audition, followed by individual auditions. Those auditioning should prepare a 16-bar cut from the musical theatre cannon. An accompanist is provided. Daf Moby: A Voyage Through Melville's Talmud

PITTSFILED, Mass. — There is a Jewish tradition of studying a single page of the Talmud every day until its completion.    According to ta press release, this tradition is called Daf Yomi (Hebrew for "page of the day"). Because the Talmud is a multi-volume work of ancient law, narrative, and commentary, a full cycle of Daf Yomi takes about seven and a half years to complete. Seiji Ozawa, Longtime BSO Conductor, Dies at 88

LENOX, Mass. — Longtime Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa died Feb. 6 in Tokyo at the age of 88.    Ozawa was the orchestra's longest serving conductor and held the title of music director for 29 years until stepping down in 2002. Seiji Ozawa Hall on the grounds of BSO's summer home Tanglewood was opened in his honor in 1994.   One of his generation's most sought-after and celebrated conductors, Ozawa was born in Shenyang, China, in 1935 and from a young age studied piano and then conducting (under Hideo Saito) in Japan.    He burst upon the musical scene in 1959, winning First Prize at the International Competition of Orchestra
