Pittsfield Cooperative Bank Names New Marketing Executive

Saint Joseph Polish Picnic Returns this Sunday

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— After a three-year hiatus from in-person celebrations, the Saint Joseph Polish Picnic is back this Sunday.    From noon until 5 p.m. the lawn of the parish will once again be filled with music, dance, food, and children's festivities.    All funds raised support the parish.    The event has been going on for generations originating as a family community picnic at Holy Family Parish.    When Holy Family closed St. Joseph took it over. Pittsfield May Query Voters on Police Chief Residency Requirement

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council is considering asking voters, "Should public safety leaders be required to reside in Pittsfield?"

On Tuesday, councilors unanimously referred Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren's request for a ballot question asking if the restriction that requires such management positions to live in the city should be eliminated to City Solicitor Stephen Pagnotta.

Pagnotta is expected to draft a question with clarifying language and return it to the body in August.  He will also identify what a "yes" and "no" vote would entail.

The original motion was to approve Warren's petition but the panel amended it to be a referral

Pittsfield Man Pleads Guilty to Breaking and Entering, Assault

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Wednesday, July 5, Mathew Marauszwski, 32 of Pittsfield, pleaded guilty to Breaking and Entering, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Assault and Battery   Marauszwski was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Agostini to 419 days in the House of Corrections for Breaking and Entering served concurrently with 1 year and 54 days in the House of Corrections for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.    Marauszwski was sentenced to 2 years probation on and after incrassation with the following conditions: mental health and substance treatment as per probation and no drugs and alcohol with random screening. Defense requested 419 days in the House of Corrections

Pittsfield Americans Finish Pool Play Unbeaten in 12YO District Tourney

DALTON, Mass. -- Bryce Hoff went 2-for-3 with a home run Tuesday to lead the Pittsfield Little League American Division 12-year-old All-Stars to a 10-0 win over Dalton-Hinsdale in the Don Gleason District 1 Tournament.   Jack Wendling went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Cooper Reed hit a solo home run for the Americans, who scored four runs in the third and fourth innings to end the game early by the run rule.   Hoff struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced in the win.   Blake Santora doubled and Ryder Shove singled for Dalton-Hinsdale, which finishes the district tournament with a record of 1-3 in the five-team round robin.   The Americans (4-0) went into

Update: Harry's Supermarket Fire Started at the Deli Counter

A Pittsfield Fire Department report released early Wednesday morning stated that the fire origin area is where the deli counter was located.   PFD members worked aggressively to control/extinguish the fire, ventilate the smoke, and prevent the fire's spread. The fire was eventually brought under control in a little over an hour and a fire watch was posted through the evening.   The report continued that there is no damage estimate at this time, and the building sustained heavy fire damage in the rear of the store, smoke, and water damage.    But the building is sound, and the damage incurred is not expected to cause the building to be razed.   There were no

BCC to Offer Water Quality Monitoring Certificate

PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced the creation of a Water Quality Monitoring Certificate Program, a new offering for the fall 2023 semester.    The program, designed to train drinking water and wastewater professionals, requires the completion of three courses totaling 11 credits:    ENV-205 Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (4 credits)  ENV-182 Environmental Advocacy (3 credits)  CHEM 150A Essentials of Chemistry (4 credits)    The certificate can be completed in as little as two semesters and is "stackable," meaning credits earned can be applied toward an associate degree in Environmental

Lemonade Stand Raises Funds to Support Families Battling Childhood Cancer

PITTSFIELD, Mass.—In two years, nine-year-old Elliot Mack raised about $800 with his lemonade stand for local organizations, but this year he set out on a mission to raise $1,000 for the nonprofit  Strong Little Souls Foundation.   And the community has gone above and beyond, doubling his original goal.    This year Elliot raised $2,020 in donations and sales for the organization dedicated to "brightening the lives of children battling cancer, and their families."    "It's so cool to see people so young give back, especially because I started Strong Little Souls when I was only 13," said Strong Little Souls Foundation founder

Updated: Flooding Causes Road Closures, State of Emergency Declarations in North County

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Although the entire county is experiencing flooding, North County seems to have been hit the hardest.   In North Adams a sinkhole on State Street at the bottom of Morgan Ave has closed down a portion of the driving lane.  A police officer is on-site directing traffic.    Brooklyn Street is completely closed off with the roadway caving in along the side of the road. Church street, Houghton Street, and West Shaft Road, among others have also had significant flooding and damage.   DPW trucks are driving throughout the city marking smaller sinkholes with traffic cones. BEAT Receives International Stewardship Award

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Environmental Action Team received a stewardship award for its work protecting and re-connecting wildlife habitats in the Berkshire Wildlife Linkage area.    The award was presented June at the International Conference on Ecology and Transportation.   The local environmental organization's habitat effort is part of a larger Staying Connected Initiative: a partnership of many conservation organizations that work together to maintain landscape connectivity across the Northern Appalachians in the Acadian Region of the United States and Canada.

Pittsfield Street Improvement Project Paving on Tyler Street

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Starting on Wednesday, July 12, paving operations will begin on Tyler Street, between the First Street intersection and the roundabout.    This work is expected to continue through Thursday, July 13 and will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.   On-street parking is prohibited during this work between the hours of 6 a.m.- 6 p.m.   Residents are encouraged to seek alternate routes during this work and follow the designated detour signs.   The city of Pittsfield thanks you for your patience during this time.

BCHS and Crane Museum of Papermaking

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Crane Museum of Papermaking and Berkshire County Historical Society are teaming up this summer to highlight the art of paper making and its history in the Berkshires.    This free experience (no admission required) will run at Arrowhead through Sept. 1 each Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 - 4:30 pm.   Crane Museum staff will be on hand to share the story of Crane papermaking as well as demonstrations of anti-counterfeiting technology and hands-on papermaking.
