Ward 6 Councilor Dina Lampiasi speaks at public hearing on plans to reduce speeding on West Street. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city believes that traffic lights at the intersection of lower and upper West Street will improve safety.
Last week, a hearing was held for improvements on the roadway that saw two pedestrian deaths last year. After a few iterations, the updated design reduces the footprint and adds a signal at the intersection of lower and upper West.
"This is a big change," City Engineer Tyler Shedd said.

DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board approved a draft of the updated variance and special permit application during its meeting on Wednesday. The variance and special permit fee application will become effective if the town's legal counsel approves it. The board will have to approve the application again following legal counsel's review. According to the town bylaws, town boards and officers have the authorization to change fees. The updated application adjusts how applicants pay for the certified abutters letters.  AUGUSTA, Maine – Pittsfield bounced back from a Sunday loss to earn a 5-0 over Lyndon, Vt., on Monday to stay alive at the Babe Ruth 16-year-old New England Regional. Eddie Ferris was a key on the mound and at the plate as Pittsfield improved to 3-1 at the regional. Ferris went 2-for-3 with a triple and a dboule and drove in a pair of runs. Detours have been set because of the closed bridge. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Rapid deterioration of the Pecks Road bridge has led to its closure until further notice and a hopefully expedited process to replace the entire structure.
The bridge was fully closed to traffic on Monday following an inspection from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation that found six areas of deterioration. Repair work is slated to begin in August by Rifenburg Contracting Corp. and the city says it continues to work closely with MassDOT on steps ahead.
Work will include demolition and reconstruction of the bridge over Onota Brook that has been reduced to one lane for five years. A detour has

DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board last week questioned whether the state is requiring the town to adjust its cannabis bylaws if dispensaries, medical or retailer, and cultivation centers are only permitted by special permit. The town does not have any dispensaries and has only received a couple of inquiries over the years, which were not pursued aside from the initial phone contact. To comply with these new regulations, the town might have to change the clause in its bylaws to stipulate that it will only take applications from equitable businesses for the next three years. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are investigating a stabbing on Saturday night that sent a 29-year-old man to the hospital. According to police, officers responded to the report of a fight happening on Boylston Street about 9:42 on Saturday. The found the victim, who had sustained several lacerations. The Pittsfield resident was transported to Berkshire Medical Center for his injuries. He is expected to survive his wounds and his last known condition was stable. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll administration awarded SolaBlock $204,835 to construct automated and modularized systems to build its Solar Masonry Units, which embed solar photovoltaics directly into a standard cement block. SolaBlock will partner with the Berkshire Innovation Center (BIC) to make the test chamber available to other members of the BIC. SolaBlock plans to add 17 new jobs with this grant investment. This project is aligned with the Manufacturing USA Institute CESMII.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The second extension of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail southward through the city is on schedule for completion in the fall.
This will connect the leg that comes out on Crane Avenue to Merrill Road, paving the way for further extensions. A paved parking lot and path can be seen from the road with construction elements on the site.
"The construction of the Pittsfield Rail Trail project began in October of 2023 and is expected to be completed on time in the fall," a representative from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation confirmed.
The 0.4-mile extension will go underneath the Dalton Avenue bridge, travel behind the Shops at Unkamet Brook
