Warmer Temperatures With Rain Later This Week

Expect some spring-like weather this week. According to Accuweather, Today, Wednesday, March 22, Temperatures will near 60 degrees with mostly cloudy skies.   On Thursday temperatures will be a little cooler, and there will be some showers throughout the day.   On Friday expect cloudy skies with temperatures in the high 40s.   On Saturday, March 25, expect temperatures in the low 40s with a mix of snow, sleet, and rain. Accuweather predicts that it will get breezier as the day goes on.   Expect slightly warmer temperatures Sunday with snow flurries in the morning.

Pittsfield Council to Tackle Snow Removal Designation

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — To plow or not to plow?

That is what the City Council will determine after Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales recommended an ordinance to designate streets for snow removal.

The Public Works subcommittee last week referred the request to the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee to start the process.

Pittsfield adopted a statute in 1945 that allows the council to designate private ways for snow and ice removal if it is within city limits and open to public use, though Morales says this definition is ambiguous.

"In our city code it is silent as to how we do the adding of a private way to be plowed," he said.

Dalton Town Hall Renovations On Time, On Budget

DALTON, Mass.—The renovation off Town Hall is running on time and on budget, Building Grounds Superintendent Patrick Pettit told the Select Board on Monday night.    The construction team did have to shut down for a day because of last week's storm.    The building was expected to be completely sealed by this past Tuesday and workers will also be setting up the staging in the opera house, or attic area, to commence work there.    The remainder of the week will consist of removing all of the ceiling tiles, installation, and lights.   Next week, crews will start removing the plaster in the opera house. Driver Arrested in Accidents in Dalton, Pittsfield

  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A motorist who allegedly caused two accidents and led police on high-speed chase on Tuesday was to be charged in the incidents.    Police say Kevin Reale was operating with a suspended license when he fled the scene of the first crash on Main Street and then collided with two other vehicles near the Coltsville intersection in Pittsfield.     Dalton Sgt. Bustin Buzzella flagged a light gray Chevrolet Malibu for driving 52 in a 35 on West Housatonic Street at around 6:09 p.m. on Tuesday. Governor Names Director of Federal Funds and Infrastructure

Public Works Subcommittee Supports Pittsfield Road Paving Requests

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The subcommittee on public works said, "Pave the roads" on Thursday.

A petition from Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick requesting the use of Chapter 90 funds for paving 10 roads was referred to Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales. A response is expected at the March 28 City Council meeting after speaking to Mayor Linda Tyer on the topic.

Chapter 90 funding is allocated by the state to every municipality and can be used on city or town-owned roads.

Cindy Cobb has been working in early education for 30 years, most of that time at Crosby Elementary.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A preschool educator with a life-threatening illness says a passion for her career and love for her pupils is keeping her going.
Cindy Cobb, a paraprofessional who is currently co-teaching pre-kindergarten at Crosby Elementary School, has been with the district for 30 years and battling her illness, which she didn't wish to detail, for about four.

Construction Grant Changes No Longer Align with Berkshire Atheneum's Goals

PITTSFIELD, Mass — The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners has adjusted this round of its construction grant program, no longer aligning with the Berkshire Athenaeum's goals.    This grant round is really no longer a renovation program, library Director Alex Reczkowski said during a trustees meeting last week.   Interested applicants need at least two locations that they would be interested in pursuing as possible libraries or locations, not just the current library, he said. FEMA Awards Nearly $1.4 M to BMC for COVID-19 Testing Costs

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will send almost $1.4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse the Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) for the cost of of testing the public and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $1,390,865 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the private 302-bed teaching hospital in Pittsfield affiliated with the University of Massachusetts Medical School for the cost of contracting to administer 22,968 COVID-19 tests between September 2020 and January 2021.   The hospital also purchased supplies such as lab coats, masks, gloves, and propane for the testing tent, and contracted to provide security and cleaning

Registrations Open for 2nd Street Workshops

Berkshire Planning Commission, Senator Talk Rural Affairs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — State Sen. Paul Mark and the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission say the governor's creation of a statewide director of rural affairs is a good sign for the region.

The senator was thanked for his support of rural communities over the years.

BCHS Lecture on Early History of Brewing in Pittsfield
