Pittsfield Superintendant Warns of Prohibited Toy Guns

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district has been alerted of a concerning trend that is prohibited on school grounds: Orby or Orbeez gel guns.

The toy guns shoot gel or water beads and are said to pose a risk of physical harm and being mistaken for a real firearm. They are a violation of the Pittsfield Public School's code of conduct and could result in a suspension of 11 days or more.

Greylock appoints Anthony Rinaldi as Director Emeritus

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Greylock Federal Credit Union's Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint Anthony Rinaldi as Director Emeritus in recognition of his longstanding and distinguished service to the credit union.   In March 2024, the Board of Directors voted to confer the Director Emeritus designation on Rinaldi. Berkshire Planning Commission Approves 'Conservative' FY25 Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission has a "conservative" budget for fiscal year 2025 with a nearly 6 percent increase.

On Thursday, the commission approved a $6,640,005 budget for FY25, a $373,990 increase from the previous year.  The spending plan saw less growth from FY24 to FY25, as the FY23 to FY24 increase was more than $886,000, or over 16 percent.

Executive Director Thomas Matuszko said there aren't any dramatic changes.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Matthew Ferraro was the first runner across the finish line at the MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon.   Ferraro clocked a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes flat on the Ashuwilticook Rail Trail course.   He finished a little more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Nick Reid (2:46:15).   Simone Veale won the race's women's division in a time of 3:18:42. She beat out Jill Hussain, who covered the course in 3:27:23.   The fastest marathoner on Sunday was Stephen Gulley, a hand cyclist, who clocked a time of 2:15:03.   The 26.2-mile circuit was covered by 150 finishers ranging in age from 18 (William Hanley in 14th place) to 72 (Ric Nudell, who

Mass Unemployment and Job Estimates for April 2024

BOSTON, MA — May 17, 2024 – The state's April total unemployment rate was 2.9 percent, unchanged from the revised March estimate of 2.9 percent, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Friday.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 1.0 percentage point lower than the national rate of 3.9 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Over-the-year, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down by 0.3 percentage points.

The labor force increased by an estimated 12,200 from the revised estimate of 3,757,000 in March, with 10,100 residents more employed and 1,900 more residents unemployed over-the-month. The

One Injured in 4-Vehicle Crash on Dalton Avenue in Pittsfield

The second car in the crash, a Subaru sedan, was also taken away by a wrecker. Two other vehicles were able to be driven away. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — One person was taken to Berkshire Medical Center following a multi-motor vehicle accident Saturday night at the Hubbard and Dalton avenues intersection.    The crashes happened at 9:04 p.m. when a westbound Honda Accord on Dalton Avenue crossed the double yellow line, striking a Subaru sedan traveling east, causing it to spin out.    An Audi sport utility vehicle collided with the Subaru, which was then rear-ended by a GMC Savana van.    The operator of the Audi was taken to BMC with unknown injuries. Dalton Health Board OKs 90-Day Variance for Food Truck

DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Health approved a 90-day variance for Pizza Trails Food Truck to get a food manager's permit during its meeting last week.    Pizza Trails owner Jake Sweener plans to operate in Dalton, in front of Downswing's Indoor Golf Center, on select Thursday nights when the truck is not already scheduled for another event.    "Most of our Thursdays are already booked, and it's a pretty rare thing. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Smiles were all around as farmers, human service workers, and officials cut the ribbon Friday on ServiceNet's new vocational farm on Crane Avenue.

Whether it is planting flowers or growing fresh produce, the program is for "sowing seeds of hope" for those with developmental disabilities.

Lanesborough to Vote on 34 Articles at ATM

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters will decide 34 warrant articles at the annual town meeting on June 11.

The Select Board endorsed a long list of articles during its regular meeting on Monday, most without discussion. 

A $11,846,607 spending plan has been proposed for fiscal year 2025, a 4.3 percent increase from the this year. The budget includes a net increase of $237,129 in education costs for the Mount Greylock Regional School District and McCann Technical School, less than the $271,478 increase in FY24.
