The only thing that mattered to investors this week was the looming U.S. government debt default. Fortunately, the comments from major players in the debt talks have been largely encouraging. The devil, however, will be in the details. The stated deadline for the passage of raising the debt ceiling is June 1, according to Janet Yellen of the U.S. Treasury Department. Some argue that it is a self-imposed deadline. Depending on several factors, including tax revenues, the U.S. might conceivably stretch its ability to pay its debt as far out as August, but that is no sure thing.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The five Berkshire County Rotary Clubs will participate in Rotary's annual Day of Service on Saturday, May 20. North Adams will be cleaning, painting and doing minor repairs to the North Adams Visitor Center. Williamstown will be helping the teen center create a garden of raised beds to enable learning about growing vegetables and herbs. Pittsfield will add native plants to the Conte Community Garden to promote pollination as well as refreshing the soil and planting an educational tea garden. Additionally, the lake will be closed on Tuesday, May 23 to all uses as part of the nuisance aquatic weed management program.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After more than 20 years of anticipation, Springside Pond is going to be restored. The Parks Commission on Tuesday approved updated site plans for the rehabilitation and restoration of the once-landmark body of water. Plans include sediment removal, dam repair, an elevated boardwalk, and a paved path for accessibility. Depending on federal permitting, construction is estimated to begin next summer and will take about three months to complete.  For more than a year, consumers have been contending with higher food prices. The latest read of April's Consumer Price Index, however, gave some hope that relief may be around the corner. Headline inflation rose 0.4 percent last month but a look under the hood revealed that the "food at home index" declined. This was the second month in a row that prices for fruit, vegetables, meat, and eggs among other items, fell. That may be so, but I certainly am not seeing those price declines in my shopping bill.  DALTON, Mass. — The Dalton Police and Fire Departments set up a mock staged accident on the lawn of Wahconah Regional High School on Wednesday morning to remind students to celebrate safely and the dangers of impaired driving. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Monday, May 15 Eric S. Lefavour, age 39 of Pittsfield, pleaded guilty to 8 charges including violating an abuse prevention order; breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony; burning a motor vehicle; and assault and battery to intimidate a victim. Lefavour was sentenced by Judge Flannery to 3 years in the House of Corrections and 3 years probation. The defendant was held as a danger in the district court, he was held as a danger in the Superior Court and continued to be held as a danger until trial against his request for release.
