Women of Color Giving Circle Annual Graduates Recognition Event

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Women of Color Giving Circle of the Berkshires, in collaboration with the NAACP – Berkshire County Branch, St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 10, will host the 21st annual Graduates Recognition Event at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at Berkshire Community College, 1350 West. St., Pittsfield.    The event will be held in the Connector building.   The event, which is free and open to the public, recognizes Berkshire County high school graduates of African descent. Missing Pittsfield Man's Remains Found

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— Police found human remains in the Morning Drive area that were identified as 69-year-old Lee Walter Meisenheimer who had been missing since July 2022.   Officers responded to the Morningview Drive area on Sunday at approximately 6:25 p.m. A resident there called after the discovery of apparent human remains and clothing in a wooded area behind a yard. Responding officers confirmed the presence of human remains and contacted personnel from the State Medical Examiner's Office. A subsequent autopsy positively identified the remains as Meisenheimer, and extended family members were notified.    At this time there is no evidence to suggest foul play,

Pittsfield Community Development Supports Chicken Ordinance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Affordable chicken permitting is reaching its final stretch. 

On Tuesday, the Community Development Board unanimously supported a zoning amendment to permit six fowl through a $25 license. 

It takes the process out of the Zoning Board of Appeals' purview, which cost more than $500, and requires a license similar to that of a dog. 

Resident Melissa Corbett has been working on this initiative with Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky for almost a year.

Plans Expected for New Wahconah Park in August Following Community Input

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nostalgic, practical, and functional. These are planners' hopes for the future of Wahconah Park. 

The park's restoration committee had its kick-off meeting with S3 Design Inc. on Monday. The firm, which was chosen in April, aims to deliver a plan at the end of August after a summer of gathering input.    Principal architect Salvatore Canciello explained that there will be three more workshops scheduled through June and July. Pittsfield Sees Certified Candidates, Ward Races

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The 2023 municipal election is heating up with multiple certified candidates and a returning face in Ward 2.

Current Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick has taken out papers for re-election and Hot Dog Ranch owner Craig Benoit has withdrawn his papers to run in that ward. Benoit is now only running for an at-large seat and his signatures have been certified.

Kronick secured the seat for Ward 2 in 2021 and is vocal in the Council Chambers, often disagreeing with his colleagues when voting on items. He strongly believes in saving taxpayer money through the city budget.

Kronick caused a stir during last year's budget season, first in his opposition to the Office

Youth Event to Learn About Track and Field Set for May 28

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Children 8 and up are invited to a Track and Field Youth Camp on Sunday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to noon on the Taconic High School track.   Join high school coaches and student-athletes from Pittsfield High and Taconic High to learn about mental health benefits of youth sports and the fundamentals of various track and field events.   The event is sponsored by Movember, which will be giving away sweatshirts to the first 50 registered participants.   Check in on the day of the event begins at 9:30 a.m. Preregistration is available here.

New textile Drop-off and Pickup In Pittsfield

LEE, Mass. — On Sunday, May 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., join the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires in kicking off Super Tzedakah Week at High Lawn Farm.   High Lawn Farm is located at 535 Summer Street in Lee.   Last June, more than 350 revelers showed up to celebrate the Jewish community. Fire Weather Watch in Berkshire County

The National Weather Service has declared a fire weather watch in effect from Tuesday, May 16 until Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.   Dry conditions and gusty winds may result in rapid fire spread of ignition occurs. Gusts could be up to 35 miles per hour.    The most critical conditions will be between late morning and sunset each day.   Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the upper 60s to 70s. Temperatures on Wednesday will be in the upper 40s to 50s.

Hancock Shaker Village Awarded NEH Challenge Grant

HANCOCK, Mass. — The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded Hancock Shaker Village an Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant for $750,000.   This is one of the five largest grants in the 2023 NEH funding cycle, which encompassed 258 recipients.   The funding, and matching monies, will support the renovation of the Visitor Center/Center for Shaker Studies, providing a year-round footprint for the Village and a research hub for scholars.   With a dual goal of improving the visitor experience and protecting the Village's world-class collection, the project will reconceive the existing building, introducing permanent collection galleries,

Pittsfield School Committee Requests Bilingual Outreach for Restructuring Study

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With a timeline laid out for the district's restructuring study that concludes at the end of the year, the School Committee weighed in on the process.

Its main suggestion was to include a dedicated public comment session for non-English speaking families of Pittsfield Public Schools.
