More Than 400 Compete in Steel Rail Races

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Williamstown's Alex White was the first runner across the finish line at Sunday's MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon on the Ashuwilticook Trail.   White maintained a 6 minute, 26 second per mile pace over the 26.2 mile course from Pittsfield to Adams and back.   He reached the finish line in 2:48.42.41 to finish 5-1/2 minutes ahead of the rest of the other 72 runners who finished the event's marathon division.   The fastest finisher in the marathon was Stephen Gulley of Billingham, the event's lone hand pedaler, who finished in 2:20:05.36.   The first female runner across the finish line was Assonet's Hailey Desmarais

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Book enthusiasts gathered on the Reading Terrace at the Berkshire Athenaeum last week to meet author Ana Reyes, known for her New York Times best seller "House in the Pines."    While writing her book, it felt natural to set the tale in the Berkshires due to Reyes' strong connection to Pittsfield.    "I just have a very strong connection to Pittsfield and when I wrote my first book, it just felt very natural that this was where I was going to put it. MassDOT Public Comment Period for Draft Capital Investment Plan

BOSTON —?The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced the public comment period for the rolling draft Fiscal Year 2024-2028 five-year Capital Investment Plan (CIP) will be held from Thursday, May 18, through Friday, June 9.     This five-year draft plan includes approximately $15.4 billion in planned transportation investments.  The CIP guides how the Commonwealth prioritizes and funds local and statewide transportation projects, and determines funding for infrastructure including railroad, transit, accessibility upgrades, roadway and bridge improvements, municipal projects, and for the needs of Regional Transit Authorities

FEMA Awards Over $4M to MassDOT for COVID-19 Precautions

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for the cost of disinfecting its facilities to continue operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $4,057,253 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the department for the cost of providing electrostatic sprayers to perform facility disinfection at 25 locations between March 2020 and December 2021.   MassDOT also contracted for facility disinfection at all 25 locations, as well as the installation of plexiglass shields to prevent the spread of the virus.   "FEMA is pleased to be

General Dynamics Holds STEM Competition

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — High school teams participating in the General Dynamics STEM Competition demonstrated their designs for a zipline mail delivery system on Friday, May 12.    A Hoosac Valley team took second place and a PHS team took third.    The students had 5 weeks to put together a mail carrier that rides along ziplines that can deliver packages to predetermined destinations.    "We tasked them this year with delivering an autonomous zipline delivery system. Roots Rising Looks to Springside Park as Home Base

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Roots Rising wants to make Springside Park its home base after years of being a pop-up organization.

On Tuesday, the agricultural nonprofit presented plans for its first location to the Parks Commission.

"We are excited because the farm will offer a lot more opportunities for programmatic growth," Executive Director and Co-Founder Jessica Vecchia said.

"We will be able to serve a lot more teenagers and more individuals in our community with the farm."

While the panel voiced support for the idea, they have many questions before any formal decisions can be made.

Woman Arraigned on Kidnapping Charges in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On the evening of Wednesday, May 17 Pittsfield Police responded to a 911 call for a reported attempted kidnapping.     According to reports, Sharon Kranich approached a mother and her two children (a toddler and a baby)on North Street and immediately grabbed and assaulted the toddler. The mother called 911. While on the phone with 911, the defendant then attempted to take the toddler and baby away from the mother.    Kranich moved ten to fifteen feet down the street with the children at which point the mother was able to secure both children back in her own custody. FEMA Awards Over $5.2M to Mass DESE for COVID-19 Test Kits

Sunday's Steel Rail Races to Cause Minor Delays on Route 8

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Drivers on Route 8 should expect minor delays on Sunday morning from the MountainOne Steel Rail Races on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail.   The event includes a marathon, half marathon and 8K distance on the bike path starting and finishing in Pittsfield while covering the distance to the end of the trail in Adams and back.   Runners will be crossing Route 8, Church St and Harbor Rd. in Cheshire; Harmony St, Depot St, Hoosac and Cook Streets in Adams.   The Rt 8 Connector Road in Lanesborough also will be closed to thru traffic.    Expected delays will be from 7:30A a.m. to 1:00 p.m.   The races are sponsored by MountainOne and produced

DA Says Kelsie Cote Killed Grandmother, Attempted to Conceal Evidence

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district attorney says Kelsie Cote assaulted and killed her grandmother with scissors and a paper weight on Halloween night and attempted to conceal the evidence. 

On Thursday, Cote was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court for first degree murder of Doris A. Cote on or between Oct. 31 and Nov.1, 2022. Her counsel waived the reading of the remaining counts on the indictment and a pre-trial hearing has been set for Nov.14. 

Cote, 26, of 22 Rich St. in North Adams, was charged with murder, assault to murder and evidence tampering in the death of her 74-year-old grandmother. 

Cote, who had a not-guilty plea entered on her behalf, entered the court
