By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
02:06PM / Wednesday, February 08, 2023
DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Health voted to postpone a demolition permit for 77 High St. during its meeting Monday evening.    The 1950s single-family home was condemned last fall after the building department determined it was unsafe because of collapsed flooring in certain areas. It is considered a public health and safety hazard.   The house is currently vacant but a lot items are still inside. An asbestos surveyor has gone into the building to attempt to complete an inspection but could not unless it was cleaned out so they can see all the walls and floors.    Officials have been attempting to limit the amount of time people are in the house unless it is

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City councilors have spoken: chicken keeping needs to be simpler and more affordable.

On Monday, the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee supported removing chicken permitting from the Zoning Board of Appeals and requiring a license similar to that of a dog.

The request was tabled and referred to City Solicitor Stephen Pagnotta, who will draft an ordinance with guidelines and come back to the panel next month for a final vote.

"I was looking at, similar to how we do dogs is there'll be a license, a very simple license fee that people would have to come in, fill out an application so we know where they are, who the people are, where the chickens are,

Dalton Historical Commission on Hunt for Fire District Charter
By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
05:14AM / Tuesday, February 07, 2023
DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission has agreed to help the Fire Department search for its charter so that it can apply for grants.    The department was established Feb. 25, 1884, and granted a charter that April. But Fire Chief James Peltier said he is unsure where to find this document.    Although having a copy of a charter might work in some areas it is very difficult to have one when your department is one of the first in the nation, he said.    "I know we don't have a copy because I've looked high and dry in our building but I don't know what they're gonna do. I've given them all the dates but they're not,

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
04:53AM / Tuesday, February 07, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission on Monday approved the demolition of two multi-family properties: 18-41 Cherry St. and 42 Gilbert St.

The more than 100-year-old Cherry Street property sustained serious damage from a neighboring fire that destroyed a 12-unit home last year.

From the street, the left side is clearly charred and the windows are boarded up. The subject of the fire, located on the corner of Lincoln and Cherry streets, was demolished under an emergency order from the city building inspector.

"We're looking to remove this and clean up the site," Mark Scoco said on behalf of AWC Construction, LLC.

He reported that there has been discussion

Pittsfield Health Board Says 'No' to Chicken Permit Responsibilities
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
06:34PM / Monday, February 06, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of Health does not agree with putting chicken permitting under its purview just to reduce the cost.

For months, Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowsky and resident Melissa Corbett have been trying to move the permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals to the Health Department because of permitting costs. Keeping six chickens currently clocks in at more than $500 and the petitioners say it could be a $25 fee under the Health Department.

Director of Public Health Andy Cambi and Health Board members are concerned that this new responsibility would overtax the department and do not see cost as a valid reason to make the change. This was restated on
